QuickStart Guide

Welcome to the QuickStart Guide. This guide is intended to help first-time users of Audigen get familiar with the software.

1. Overview

What is Audigen?
We created Audigen for users who were looking for Xtreamer functionality for their PC-based music collection. Audigen is essentially a database to which you can add your existing music files. Once your music has been registered in the Audigen database, it becomes accessible through the familiar Xtreamer web-based interface. You can also use Audigen to do basic management and maintenance of your PC-based music library.

Audigen Components
The following are the major components of Audigen:

  1. Audigen Manager: Runs in the systray as a red "au" icon. The Manager contains the Audigen database and needs to be running in the background in order for the other components to function. Right click on the icon to bring up the Audigen Manager menu.

  2. Audigen Explorer: This familiar Explorer interface is where you actually manage the contents of the Audigen database. Use it to add your music files to the database, edit tags, organize files, and create and manage playlists. To open Audigen Explorer, select "Open Audigen Explorer" from the Audigen Manager menu, or access it through the "Audigen Explorer" icons on your Desktop or under My Computer.

  3. Audigen Xtreamer: Xtreamer is the web browser-based interface to your Audigen database that provides remote streaming playback capability. You can access Xtreamer through any normal web browser either locally on your own computer, or through a browser running on another computer connected to your network, or even a remote computer across the Internet.

2. Installation

Download the Audigen Installer if you haven't already. Then simply double-click on the installer file to run the installation. At the end of installation, if the installer says you need to reboot, please do reboot before using Audigen.

Once installation is complete, you should see the Audigen Manager icon appear in the systray. The icon is a red "au" symbol. If you don't see the icon, start Audigen Manager from the Start menu and check that 'audmgr.exe' appears in Windows Task Manager.

3. Adding your Music to the Audigen Database

Open Audigen Explorer
You add music to the Audigen database through the Audigen Explorer interface. To open Audigen Explorer, you can double-click on the systray icon, or use the Audigen Explorer icons on the Desktop or in My Computer.

Drag and Drop to Add Music
If you have used our other software for MP3 players, Audigen Explorer should be instantly familiar when you open it. While our other software packages are interfaces to MP3 players, Audigen is an interface to a database of music on your PC. You add or register your existing music with the Audigen database the same way you would transfer your music to an MP3 player, by drag and drop. Open another Explorer window to a folder with your music. Then drag and drop either music files or folders of music files to Audigen's Audio Tracks folder. Audigen will then recursively scan through the files and folders and add them to the Audigen database.

Manage Your Music
Once you have added the music you want to the Audigen database, use the Audigen Explorer interface to go through your files, edit tags, and create playlists. To remove some files from the database, just select them, right-click, and click "Remove from Database". This will remove the selected tracks from Audigen's database, but does not actually delete them from your PC.

4. Browsing and Streaming via Audigen Xtreamer

Browse to the Xtreamer Homepage
After you add music files to the Audigen database, they immediately become available through the Audigen Xtreamer web interface. To browse to the Xtreamer homepage, just point your browser to the URL http://localhost:8050. Please note if you are running firewall software on your computer, you will need to allow Audigen access to network port number 8050 on your computer. This is the port Xtreamer uses to listen for web browser requests to serve up the Xtreamer pages. If Audigen is working properly, you should see the following page in your browser:

Streaming Playback
To stream songs back to your favorite playback software, go into a music folder such as "Audio Tracks", and click the "STR" link next to any track. This will launch a playback application and begin streaming music. To change the application used for streaming, go into Windows Explorer's Folder Options dialog and change the default application set to handle .M3U playlist files.

Remote Access
To access the Xtreamer interface from another computer on your network, go to that remote computer, open a web browser and point it to the URL http://xtreamer-computer:8050 where "xtreamer-computer" should be replaced by the network name or IP address of the computer on which Audigen is running and where you music collection is stored. If you want to access Xtreamer from across the Internet, you'll need to configure your firewall/router to "port-forward" requests for port 8050 to the computer on which Audigen is running.

Configuring Xtreamer
Xtreamer offers a number of options to control its operation and behavior. For example, you can set up username/password access, logging, and change the network port Xtreamer uses. To access these options, right-click on the systray icon and select "Audigen Manager Options".

Thank you for using Audigen and enjoy!
