QuickStart Guide

Welcome to the QuickStart Guide. This brief guide is intended to help first-time users of Cyclef Explorer get going quickly. For a more comprehensive guide to setup and all the features of Cyclef, see the Cyclef OmniTome.

1. Prepping Your System

Does your Xclef appear as a drive in Windows?
Make sure your Xclef is plugged in and recognized as a drive letter by Windows.

Xclef's volume label must be set to default.
In order for Cyclef to distinguish your Xclef from the other hard drives in your system, its volume label must be set to "DMCHD" (without the quotation marks). This is the default label out of the box, but if you've changed it, please change it back. To do so, just right-click on the drive under My Computer, select "Properties", and edit the name at the top of the dialog.

2. Installation

Download the Cyclef Installer if you haven't already. Then simply double-click on the installer file to run the installation. At the end of installation, if the installer says you need to reboot, please do reboot before using Cyclef.

Once installation is complete, you should see the Cyclef Manager icon appear in the systray. It looks like an Xclef tilted over to the right, its screen dark. If you don't see the icon, start Cyclef Manager from the Start menu and check that 'cycmgr.exe' appears in Windows Task Manager.

3. Connecting Your Xclef

Physical Connection: Once Cyclef is installed, it's time to physically plug in your Xclef using the USB cable. Once connected, the display of your Xclef should say "USB CONNECTED".

Wait for Windows to Mount Your Xclef: After plugging in your Xclef, Windows should detect and mount your Xclef as a drive within a few seconds. You'll know Windows has mounted your Xclef when you see the Windows 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon (with the green arrow) appear in the systray.

Soft-Connection: Finally, right-click on the Cyclef Manager icon and select "Connect Xclef". Once the LCD display in the systray icon lights up, you're connected and ready to go.

4. Launching Cyclef Explorer

Once you are soft-connected, you can launch the main Cyclef Explorer window. You can either right-click again on the systray icon and select "Open Cyclef Explorer" or double-click on the Cyclef Explorer icon on your Desktop. You can also open a My Computer window and double-click on the Cyclef Explorer icon. Once you've opened the Cyclef Explorer window, you're ready to start browsing around your Xclef!

5. "It's Empty!" - Importing Existing Tracks

Once the Explorer interface opens, you'll notice that Cyclef reports no tracks on your Xclef. Don't panic. Your Xclef is not empty (unless it really is empty), it's just that the Cyclef database doesn't know about your existing tracks yet. Cyclef keeps a database of your tracks in order to provide much of its advanced functionality.

In order to "import" your existing tracks into the database, right-click on the systray icon again, and select "Cyclef Manager Options". In the options dialog, select "Xclef HD-x00 Series". There you'll see a button labeled "Import Manual Tracks" that will import your existing tracks. Please note that this will not phyiscally move or reorganize your tracks. It just registers them in Cyclef's database so you can take advantage of Cyclef's advanced management interface.

However, if you do want to have Cyclef reorganize your tracks later based on its optimized file structure, you can use the "Relocate Tracks" button. Please note that this relocation is not reversible.

Once the import is complete, go back to the Explorer interface and you'll now see a view of your Xclef that you've never seen before!

6. Transferring a File

You only need to run the import once. If you use Cyclef to transfer your tracks in the future, it will automatically keep track of them in the database. Let's try one now. First open up a valid drop folder in Cyclef, such as "Audio Tracks". Then open up a second Explorer window and browse to your music files. To transfer, simply drag and drop a file onto the Cyclef Explorer window. It's that simple.

7. Disconnecting your Xclef

When you're finished, you need to disconnect Cyclef so it can save all database changes. Close all your Cyclef Explorer windows (otherwise you can't disconnect), then right-click on the systray icon and select "Disconnect Xclef...". Then simply do a Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" as normal.

8. Going From Here

At this point, you have just barely scratched the surface of what Cyclef has to offer.
