Release 8.7.5 (2005-06-11)

New Features:

  • Improved MTP/PlaysForSure Performance
For users with Zen Micros running the MTP/PlaysForSure firmware, performance has been dramatically improved. You should see delays in navigating between various folders eliminated, and much faster transfer speeds, especially on players with many files already loaded.

  • User-Selectable Driver Mode
To simplify usage and avoid driver conflicts, you can now manually select which driver mode Notmad will use to connect to your Jukebox or Zen device. For now, this option only applies to the Zen Micro, which has two types of firmware available: Creative native firmware and MTP/PlaysForSure firmware. If you are running the 1.x firmware that ships with the Zen Micro, then use the "Creative Driver Mode". If you have installed the 2.x MTP/PlaysForSure firmware on your Zen Micro, then use the "MTP/PlaysForSure" driver mode. The driver mode is easily selectable by choosing "Set Driver Mode" from the systray icon's right-click menu. For all other Jukebox and Zen devices, just use the default "Creative Driver Mode". This driver selection does not apply to MuVo, Nomad II, MuVo^2, or any of Creative's multitude of other flash-based players supported by Notmad.

Release 8.7.3 (2005-03-24)

New Features:

  • Support for MuVo V200
This release adds support for the MuVo V200, a close cousin of the N200 device for which we added support in the previous release. The same features available for the N200 are also available for the V200.

Release 8.7.2 (2005-03-16)

New Features:

  • Support for MuVo N200 (aka MuVo Micro N200)
This release adds support for the newer MuVo N200 device, which is also known as the MuVo Micro N200. Notmad brings the popular AudioMorph, MuVoMAX, and Tunes2Go features to Creative's latest flash-based player.

Release 8.7.1 (2004-12-29)

New Features:

  • Support for New Zen Micro "PlaysForSure/MTP" Firmware 2.x
Yesterday, Creative released new MTP firmware for the Zen Micro that breaks compatibility with Notmad Explorer and all of Creative's own existing applications.

Today's Notmad Explorer 8.7.1 release adds MTP support, allowing it to fully manage Zen Micro's that have been upgraded to this new firmware. Notmad auto-detects your firmware version and transparently switches modes depending on whether you have the existing "PDE" firmware or the new "MTP" firmware. Support for other Creative players is not affected.

Although Notmad Explorer is now fully compatible with the new MTP firmware, we recommend that you continue using the existing "PDE" 1.01.xx firmware unless you have a specific reason to switch. In our testing, the "PDE" firmware (which is based on firmware code Creative has been using for 3 years) is more stable and faster in critical operations such as connect/disconnect, playlist editing, and transfers. Also, the new "MTP" firmware no longer supports the Active Queue functionality that is available in the "PDE" firmware. Active Queue is the feature that allows you to control playback on your Zen from the PC, and is one of the features that distinguishes Creative players from all other MP3 players.

Release 8.7.0 (2004-12-22)

New Features:

  • Utilities Folder
We've added a new folder called "Utilities" to the top-level of the Notmad Explorer interface. This folder will contain various modular utilities for maintaining your player's contents. To begin with, we've created a "Remove Empty Playlists" utility. Over time we will add many more utilities to perform various useful tasks.

  • Revamped MuVo2 Support
We've recently completed an internal project to create a new lightweight, high-performance foundation to support certain types of MP3 players. This foundation has already been rolled out in other products, and has now been incorporated into Notmad to update its MuVo2 support with improved performance and new and improved utilities for importing and reorganizing file structure on the player.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed MuVo NX/TX/Slim/Rhomba Detection
We've fixed a bug where Notmad was not properly detecting these players in manual mode. Some users might have run into this problem after updating to the latest firmware for these players.

Release 8.6.4 (2004-12-06)

New Features:

  • Zen Micro Support
This release adds official support for the new Creative Zen Micro players.

Release 8.6.3 (2004-11-11)

New Features:

  • Xtreamer Security Improvements
For security reasons, usernames and passwords are now required when a remote computer accesses Xtreamer. Therefore, you must set up at least one remote access account before Xtreamer can be accessed from other computers. Local access does not require username and password. We have added a account management interface to make it simple and fast to create, edit, and delete accounts. Access this new account manager by by right-clicking the Notmad icon in the systray and selecting "Notmad Manager Options". In addition, we have disabled authentication on the audio streams themselves to improve streaming compatibility with playback applications that do not handle HTTP authentication well or at all. You now only need to authenticate once when accessing the initial Xtreamer homepage.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved ID3 Tag Handling
In the previous release, MP3 files with a complete ID3V1 tag but a blank ID3V2 tag would not be read properly. This release should properly handle such MP3's and read the information from the V1 tag and ignore the blank V2 tag.

  • Fixed default Xtreamer skin for proper display alignment in Firefox/Mozilla browsers.

Release 8.6.2 (2004-10-21)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • WMP10/Creative Driver Issue
We have received user reports of Jukebox problems after installing Windows Media Player 10. Based on our research, we believe there is a bug in the interaction between some WMP10 components and Creative's device drivers. Because Notmad uses Creative's device drivers as well, this issue can affect Notmad. The problem manifests as system slowdowns or lockups, due to the CTPdeSrv.exe part of the Creative driver using up all CPU time. You may see this when opening Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer with your Jukebox connected. Although we cannot fix WMP10 or Creative's drivers directly, we have made some modifications to Notmad which should help reduce the likelihood of the problem manifesting. We also highly recommend Jukebox owners run a clean up operation on their Jukebox, as file system inconsistencies seem to trigger the problem more often. To do so, boot your Jukebox into rescue mode by pressing the pinhole reset button on the side while holding down the play/pause button. After booting into rescue mode, run the Clean Up procedure.

  • Improved VBR MP3 Analysis
We have improved our bitrate analysis code to properly calculate the play length of VBR MP3 files encoded by certain specific encoders. If you have VBR files that do not play for their full duration on your player, please re-transfer them using this release.

  • Fixed bug where files would not transfer to PC properly if one or more of the file's tag fields ended in a period.
  • Robustness improvements in transfer to PC functions.
  • Xtreamer can now be configured to use port numbers up to 99999 instead of just 9999.
  • Fixed Explorer problem where status bar file information would lag behind by one file when navigating up and down the file list using the keyboard.

Release 8.6.1 (2004-09-17)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug in MuVo2 support where files with artist or album names ending in periods (such as R.E.M.) would not be properly transferred and added to the Notmad database.
  • Fixed bug in 8.6.0 where Playlist Index did not display the correct playlist membership information.
  • Fixed instability in playlist merging function.
  • Fixed a tag reading bug causing accented UTF-8 characters in ID3V2 tags to be corrupted when an ID3V1 tag is also present in the MP3 file.

Release 8.6.0 (2004-09-02)

New Features:

  • Improved "Copy to Computer" Dialog
The "Copy to Computer" dialog now features a "New Folder" button to create a new folder to transfer to on the fly, it remembers the last destination folder you selected so you don't need to keep selecting it again, and the dialog is now resizable, making navigation easier.

  • Enhanced Playlist Duplicates Handling
In previous releases, deleting a track from a playlist would delete all instances of the same track from the playlist, instead of just the one instance that was selected. In this release, only the selected tracks are deleted. We've also added a new function to automatically detect and remove duplicate entries from a playlist. You can access it by right-clicking on a playlist.

  • Tracks can now be deleted off the player from the "Playlist Index".
  • When user attempts to use drag and drop to transfer a large amount of files back to the PC, Notmad now intercepts the operation and uses the "Copy to Computer" mechanism instead, which is more efficient.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for MuVo2 Import Feature
In previous releases, some users would see the "Import Existing Content" process appear to freeze after scanning the drive for content if there are no playlists aboard. This is fixed and the import process should properly complete now.

  • Transfer dialog now shows the correct device icon when transferring data files and transfer back to the PC.
  • Fixed installer bug where Manager would launch with its working directory set to a temporary folder instead of the final install folder. This bug prevented the redchair_installer temporary folder from being deleted if the user wanted to.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause a crash when trying to read the tags of some corrupt MP3 files.

Release 8.5.9 (2004-07-26)

New Features:

  • Support for Creative Zen Touch
Notmad Explorer now fully supports the recently introduced Creative Zen Touch.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Further stability improvements to the TrueStream and Xtreamer streaming mechanisms.
  • Fixed .m3u playlist import function for MuVo2. Previous releases would not properly import playlists stored in the same folder as the tracks it refers to. This release properly handles such relative paths.

Release 8.5.8 (2004-07-19)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility
Notmad has been tested with the latest beta release of the upcoming Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Microsoft Windows XP. A specific crash with SP2 when navigating to the Active Queue folder has been fixed. If you encounter any other problems after installing SP2, please contact technical support and let us know!

  • Improved Xtreamer Performance
In previous releases, streaming playback could hang at the end of a track on some systems, requiring the Manager or the computer to be restarted. This release features an improved streaming mechanism that should resolve this problem. Also fixed a bug where Xtreamer could use an unnecessary amount of temp space in certain circumstances.

  • MuVo2 Support Improvements
Fixed icon displayed in My Computer. Previous releases displayed the Zen Xtra icon. Also removed the 100-track import limit in the trial edition.

  • Fixed problem with Explorer running at High priority instead of Normal when launched from the systray icon.

  • Tunes2Go now asks user to confirm before formatting memory and beginning transfer.
  • Tunes2Go no longer hangs if you initiate a transfer without selecting any tracks.

  • Increased streaming limit to five tracks in trial edition.
  • Removed unnecessary warning message about Winamp integration when changing TrueStream options.
  • Minor installer improvements.

Release 8.5.7 (2004-06-06)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • New, Fully Integrated File Type Exclusion
The file format exclusion options for transfers have been improved to allow the exclusion of all file formats supported by the player, not just the limited options available in previous releases. These are the options available in the Transfers section of the Options dialog. The new options are also properly integrated with AudioMorph and SpeedSync as well as normal transfers from the PC.

  • Improved Tag Writeback Robustness
In previous releases, tag writeback for transfers back to the PC could hang on some files with invalid or corrupt tags. The tag writeback facility has been improved to more gracefully handle such files and avoid hangs during transfers. If you still run into files with tags that cause problems, let us know, we may want to take a look at the file.

  • Major Connect/Disconnect Speed Improvements for MuVo2
Certain validation checks being performed during connect to and disconnect from the MuVo2 have been optimized. Connect and disconnect times should now be many times faster than in the previous release, especially for heavily loaded MuVo's.

  • Fix for WMA File Type Handling on MuVo2
In previous releases, WMA files on the MuVo2 would be incorrectly reported as MP3 files by Notmad. This has been fixed so that WMA files show up as WMA type.

Release 8.5.5 (2004-05-12)

Improvements to MuVo2 Support:

  • Improved Auto-Detection
For Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems, Notmad no longer relies on the volume label of the MuVo2 to detect it. You can rename the label to anything you like and Notmad should still detect it based on its USB id.

  • New Import Wizard
New wizard helps you setup Notmad for use with your MuVo2 the first time you run it. This includes running an initial import of existing tracks and playlists, and configuration of your folder and filename generation options.

  • Fully Customizable Folder and Filename Generation
The folder structure and filenames generated by Notmad when transferring new tracks to the MuVo2 are now fully customizable. The previous release only had two options, Artist\Track.mp3, and Artist\Album\Track.mp3. Now, you can use any tag field as a folder or part of the filename. We've also added the 'first letter of artist name' and the 'original filename from the PC' as available fields. Also, we've fixed a bug in the previous release where filenames would be inappropriately truncated.

  • Optimized Playlist Compatibility
The MuVo2 is very particular about the .m3u file format you use for playlists on the device. Minor deviations from the expected format can cause the player to lockup. In this release we have optimized the playlist format generated by Notmad for compatibility with the player. Notmad generated playlists should also now display properly in MediaSource.

  • Ratings Support
You can now assign 5 star ratings to each of your tracks on the MuVo2 and use these ratings to build dynamic MorphLists.

  • File Path Display in 'Audio Tracks'
The actual filepath and filename of each track is now available for display in the Audio Tracks folder. Right-click on the column headers to display this column.

  • Import Utility Now Also Imports Existing Playlists
The 'Import' utility used to import existing tracks on your MuVo2 can now also import existing .m3u playlists produced by other software so that you can manage them in Notmad.

  • Relocate Utility Cleans Up Empty Folders
The 'Relocate' utility that reorganizes existing files based on your folder and filename generation settings now cleans up old, empty, unused folders as it goes along, keeping your player nice and tidy.

  • Fix for Missing Tracks on Windows 98 and Windows ME
The previous release, 8.5.4, introduced a bug on Win98 and WinME platforms which would cause Notmad to not recognize tracks on your player after connection, transfer, or recovery. This bug has been fixed. To recover files that you know are on your player but do not appear in Notmad, use the 'Import Existing Content' utility under 'Notmad Manager Options' in the systray icon's menu.

  • Fix for Duplicate Transfer Deletion Bug
In the previous release, attempting to transfer a track that already exists on a MuVo2 could cause the existing copy on the player to be deleted. You could also see this deletion occur when transferring a playlist file in order to construct a playlist using tracks already on the player. This bug has been fixed.

Release 8.5.4a (2004-05-05)

New Features:

  • New MuVo Device Support
In addition to the MuVo and MuVo NX, Notmad Explorer now also supports the MuVo2, MuVo TX, MuVo Slim, and Rhomba in all capacities.
Release 8.5.4 (2004-05-03)

New Features:

  • Major Enhancements to SpeedSync
The SpeedSync feature has received a major overhaul. First, the tag cache is now based on a new mechanism that should improve scalability and stability, especially for users with large sync sets. Scanning for new or modified files in the sync set has been sped up by 10x. The SpeedSync dialog also features new, improved feedback indicators for the user to monitor progress of the sync comparison. More appropriate device icons are also displayed to match your specific player. Long pathnames displayed in the results tabs have also been compressed to improve readability. Finally, SpeedSync now performs the same automatic tag filling as the transfer mechanism does, so that files with missing tag fields are no longer sync'ed over and over again.

  • Tag Writeback on Transfer to PC
As you may or may not know, tag edits you make on board your player are made to a separate tag database and are not written to the files themselves on board the player. This new feature takes the changes you've made to the database and writes them back to the actual music files themselves when you transfer them back to the PC. This should also improve the behavior of SpeedSync, so that it no longer repeatedly syncs tracks whose tags you've edited on board the player. This writeback feature currently supports MP3 and WMA files. Tag writeback for other formats will come in future releases. This option is enabled by default. You can disable it using a checkbox in the "Tag Handling" section of the Options dialog.

  • Albums by this Artist from Amazon.com
This new feature enhances your music-listening experience by helping you find albums you might not know about by artists you enjoy. Right-click on any track on your player and select "Albums by this Artist". This will bring up a dialog that lists all released albums by the artist you clicked on. Albums you already have in your collection are denoted with a special icon, allowing you to browse and explore other albums by that artist that you don't have yet. Double-click on any album for more details, track list, commentary, and song samples, courtesy of Amazon.com.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • When transferring files to MuVo, the read-only flag (if set on original file) is no longer inherited by the copy on the MuVo. This prevents problems with editing tags of files on the MuVo when transferring from read-only sources like CD's.
  • More appropriate device icons are now displayed in the transfer dialog.
  • Notmad now uses the system-wide Windows setting for default web browser for all web browsing tasks. You no longer need to specify a browser in the Notmad Options dialog. This setting is used for browsing Xtreamer, accessing online help, and other tasks.
  • In previous releases, transferring tracks with one or more blank tag fields could create folder names containing only spaces. This would happen if your filename generation template specified folder structure using a tag field whose value for a track was blank or only spaces. In this case, the folder would be properly created and the transfer would proceed, but folders with only spaces in their names cannot be deleted in Windows Explorer. You can only delete them from the DOS prompt. Notmad has been modified so that "Unknown" is substituted when a blank field is detected, so no non-deletable folders will be created.
  • Added Manager detection for when Notmad is not installed properly in a Windows user account. User is notified.

Release 8.5.2a (2004-04-20)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • The track display speedup in 8.5.2 introduced a crashing bug when viewing the Active Queue. This has been fixed.

Release 8.5.2 (2004-04-19)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Major Track Display Speedup
The display and refresh speed of all track folders has been increased by 100%. This will be particularly noticeable when in the Audio Tracks folder of a moderately to fully loaded Jukebox. This should also make it faster and easier to edit tags on such Jukeboxes.

  • Streaming Improvements for Windows Media Player
In previous releases, some users had difficulties streaming from Notmad to WMP9. Users would see WMP9 attempting to connect to the stream by ultimately time-out. We have made some improvements to the streaming mechanism which should resolve this problem for the users who experienced it.

  • New Jukebox Zen Icons
We have included new, improved icons for the Zen Edition of Notmad. They are designed after the appearance of the newer Zen Xtra, instead of the original Zen on which the old icons are based. Thanks to user Kirck for his contributions.

  • Fixed Simple Search Mode in Xtreamer
The behavior of Simple Search mode in Xtreamer was inadvertently changed during the last round of SQL Engine improvements. The original behavior was to match substrings. The last round of SQL Engine improvements changed its behavior to strict string matching. The behavior has been restored to substring matching. The other modes and types of search were not affected.

  • Improvements to AudioMorph WMA VBR Encoding
In previous releases, AudioMorph would allow you to select 100% quality setting for WMA VBR, which is not actually a valid setting for the encoder. This has been changed to the valid value of 98%. We have also added an additional 90% quality setting for you to use.

  • Compatibility with Latest MuVo Firmware
We have made some changes so that the MuVo Edition of Notmad can now properly recognize MuVo devices that have been upgraded with the latest firmware release. (This only applies to the original MuVo, not the MuVo NX).

  • Fixed Data File Exclusion Bug
We've fixed a bug where when the 'Skip Data Files' option is selected, audio formats such as Ogg and FLAC would also be mistakenly skipped.
Release 8.5.1 (2004-04-04)

New Features:

  • New Active Queue Control via Systray Icon
Many users have requested quicker access to Active Queue controls for playback on the Jukebox. So, we have added two features to improve Active Queue usage. When one or more tracks have been added to the Queue in the Explorer interface, the systray icon has the following two new features. First, the tooltip displayed when hovering over the systray icon now displays the currently playing track. Second, there is an additional item in the right-click context menu that gives access to controls such as Play, Pause, Stop, Next, Previous, and Volume adjustment. We have also enhanced the Volume adjustment dialog so that it responds to keyboard input as well as mouse dragging.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for 'Connect Stuck at 2 Bars' Problem
Some users have recently reported that when connecting to their Jukebox, the small 'Connecting...' dialog near the systray hangs at 2 bars of progress. It appears that if you wait for 1 to 2 minutes, the connection will actually complete, and everything will function normally at that point. You can even disconnect and re-connect without the problem recurring. However, if you close and restart the Manager in the systray, you will again get the 1 to 2 minute delay on the first connect. We have traced this down to what appears to be a bug in Creative's device drivers. Specifically, there seems to be a conflict between older and newer versions of their Jukebox drivers. If you've been having this stuck at 2 bars problem, this release of Notmad should be able to work around this conflict and allow you to connect as normal. Please contact us if this problem persists even after installing this release.

  • Fix for Transfer and AudioMorph Crash in 'lameacm.acm'
Some users have reported crashes at the very beginning of transfers to the player, and when clicking 'AudioMorph' in the Options dialog. Clicking on "more info" in the Windows crash dialog indicates that the crash is occuring in a file named 'lameacm.acm'. This file is not part of Notmad and was installed by some other software on your system. It appears that many users have an old alpha release of this file that is unstable and buggy. While Notmad does not actually use this file, it crashes when Notmad tries to scan for encoders installed on your system. This release should skip over this file to avoid the crashes. Please let us know if you still get these 'lameacm.acm' crashes after upgrading to this release.

  • Fixed Size Display Error on Some Systems
Users with certain Windows 'Regional and Languange Options' settings may have seen a bug in previous releases where file and capacity sizes were displayed improperly. Specifically, the last digit of numbers greater than 999 would have their last digit cut off. For example, a file with size 7,255 KB would be displayed as 7,25 KB. This release fixes this bug. Please note that this was a display bug only and sizes were still correctly calculated internally in previous releases.

  • Fix for Continuous Streaming Playback
Release 8.5.0 introduced a bug where when streaming to apps such as Winamp or Windows Media Player, playback would stop after each song, requiring the user to manually click the 'Next Track' button in the player. This bug should now be fixed so that the next track plays automatically after the previous track is complete.

  • Fixed bug where search results for the Jukebox 1 running under JBDirect Mode would display with blank information.
  • Fixed AudioMorph logging so that it does not report MP3-style bitrates when transcoding to WAV format.
  • Improved WMA library resource handling on long transfers.
  • Fixed SQL Engine so that 'plid' column now properly contains the playlist id, instead of duplicating the contents of the 'aid' column as it did in previous releases.

Release 8.5.0 (2004-03-23)

New Features:

  • Navigation and Usability Improvements
Columns displayed in the main track views are now fully customizable. Right-click on the column headers for a menu to easily select which fields you want displayed. Many users have asked for the ability to display the Artist, Album, and Title fields separately, and this is now possible. The order of the columns can also be customized by simply dragging and dropping the column headers into place, and Notmad will remember the column widths that you set. Changes in the Spreadsheet view and full row selection options now take effect immediately and do not require you to navigate out of and back into a folder. Finally, the name of the currently selected track is now displayed in the status bar, which is useful when you are scrolled over to the right to see extended attribute columns.

  • AudioMorph "2"
We have completely overhauled the AudioMorph framework for transcoding files on-the-fly. The new AudioMorph features a brand-new intuitive user interface for specifying how you want each audio file format to be handled. AudioMorph also now supports more external plugin encoders and we've also added support for the popular FLAC format. This means that with the appropriate plugins, you can now enjoy your Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files on your Nomad in addition to MP3, WMA, and WAV files. As before, you can also reduce the bitrate of your existing files. There is also a new option for quickly switching AudioMorph on and off for all formats at once.

  • New Folder-Sensitive Toolbars
We have replaced the double-click "action" items in some folders (e.g. New Playlist...) with folder-sensitive toolbars. In folders where there are common tasks to be performed, a toolbar appears with easy to reach buttons to perform those tasks. As before, all options are still accessible from the right-click context menus.

  • NotmadSQL and MorphList Improvements
We have greatly enhanced the NotmadSQL engine which provides search, reporting, and MorphList capabilities. Equals (=) and Not Equals (!=) now mean "exactly equals" and "does not exactly equal". They no longer do substring matching as in previous versions. Instead, you can now use the Contains (?) and Does Not Contain (#) operators for substring matching. String comparisons are still case-insensitive. This means that the "equals", "does not equal", "contains", and "does not contain" options in the MorphList editor now work properly. These enhancements require a new version of the SmallParser.dll file, which will be automatically installed. Please verify that the file installed in your Shared folder has version 1.0.2.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Enhancements to WMA AudioMorph Settings
In previous releases, AudioMorph would allow you to select bitrates and quality settings that were not actually supported by the WMA encoder. When these values were selected, the WMA encoder would default to its highest quality setting, generating files generally larger than desired. This release fixes the problems so that only valid values can be selected by the user in the configuration dialog.

  • Fix for Toolbar Conflicts
Other programs which improperly manipulate the toolbar can cause the wrong toolbar images to be displayed in Explorer windows, including Notmad windows. We've added the ability for Notmad to automatically repair the toolbar if it has been corrupted by other applications.

  • Streaming Playback Fixes
In previous releases, certain applications without version information (like Foobar2000) would not appear in the TrueStream application selection box. We've added a work-around and such applications should now be selectable for streaming playback. We've also worked around a bug in RealPlayer 10 that caused playback to cut out after 2 seconds. Finally, streamed titles should no longer contain unsightly URL-encodings such as %20.

  • Fixed bug where right-clicking on the Notmad Explorer window causes an error when Notmad Manager is not running.
  • In the Audio tab of the ATM dialog, navigating the track list using the arrow keys now properly updates the filepath box. In previous releases, the filepath box would only be updated when clicking on tracks with the mouse.
  • Fixed crash some users may have seen when navigating to the Device Information folder.
  • Notmad should now properly read and report the bitrate and samplerate of WAV files transferred to the Nomad.
  • Fixed bug in Ogg Vorbis support installer that would wipe the Shared folder containing required components.

Release 8.4.1 (2004-02-18)

New Features:

  • Seekable Streaming
In this release, Explorer and Xtreamer streaming playback is seekable. This means that when streaming to playback software that supports stream seeking, you can fast forward, rewind, and jump around in a track. Stream seeking is supported in Winamp, Windows Media Player and other playback applications.

  • Full Row Selection Option
There is a new option to control whether the full row is highlighted when selecting an item in the right pane of Explorer. Although many people find the full row highlighting aesthetically pleasing, it also makes it more difficult to bring up the context menu for a folder by clicking in a blank area of the right pane. So now there is an option so you can choose which behavior you'd like.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Removed unnecessary URL-encoding characters in filenames when streaming and downloading.
  • Fixed time elapsed and time remaining counters in the main transfer dialog.
  • Fixed bug during transfers where tag titles were being set to the filename even when tag was complete.
  • Explorer now gives an error message when you try to stream locked tracks, instead of failing silently.

Release 8.4.0 (2004-02-08)

New Features:

  • Quick Navigation Buttons
We've added buttons to the Explorer toolbar that act as shortcuts to the most commonly used folders. This should make it easier to navigate quickly when your left pane tree is heavily expanded.

  • User-Selectable Double-Click Actions
In the General options of the configuration dialog, you can now select the action to be performed when double-clicking on audio tracks in the right pane. Configure a double-click to edit a tag or queue or play a track.

  • Custom TrueStream Application Registration
In previous releases, the applications you could select for TrueStream and Xtreamer playback only those that had properly registered themselves with Windows. In this release, you can now choose any application and register it with Windows automatically so it can be selected for TrueStream and Xtreamer.

  • Improved Handling of Large Numers of Data Files
We've improved connection speeds to Jukeboxes containing large numbers of data files, in the thousands. There is also a new option in the Notmad Manager Options to turn off summary size calculations. Try this if Notmad is timing out when connecting.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Display and Appearance
    • 32-bit icons are now properly displayed in the right pane under Windows XP. In previous releases, icons were scaled to 256 colors and shadows were rendered as flat black.
    • Fixed list sorting in the right pane so that [ All: Artist ] meta folders now sort at the top even when that artist's album names start with a number or non-alphanumeric character.
    • Improved the appearance of all configuration dialogs.
    • Removed solid black line around the left pane tree in the Manager Options dialog.
    • Fixed systray icon display so they appear in the right order on Windows XP systems.

  • TrueStream and Xtreamer Playback
    • Fixed potential crash when clicking on the TrueStream options item in the configuration dialog.
    • Fixed bug that causes streaming playback to fail if the user modifies the "Transfer to PC" filename generation template to create folder structure.
    • Fixed problem where the TrueStream application selection drop-down box would display garbage characters for the "Default" entry on certain systems.
    • Fixed Xtreamer bug where files with tags containing illegal filename characters would download in IE with random 7-character filenames, instead of proper filenames generated from the tag.
    • Fixed Xtreamer navigation of artist, album, and genre folders where the name contains a double quotation mark.
    • Fixed MIME types served by Xtreamer for WMA, WAV, and Ogg Vorbis files.

  • Active Queue
    • The current track is now highlighted in green for better visibility.
    • Improved the visual feedback during Active Queue reordering so it is easier to see where the dragged track will be inserted.

  • Playlist Editing
    • Hitting the 'Delete' key on a playlist item now only removes it from the playlist, instead of remove it and deleting the track, which was the behavior in previous releases.
    • You no longer need to hold down the 'Shift' key to reorder tracks in a playlist.
    • Improved the visual feedback during playlist reordering so it is easier to see where the dragged track will be inserted.

  • Transfers and Tag Handling
    • Dramatically sped up "File List Build" process when transferring a large number of files.
    • Sped up Advanced Transfer Management tag reading phase by 10%.
    • When a file has no tag or no title, the tag fill dialog auto-fills the title field with the filename. This should be helpful for WAV files.

  • SpeedSync
    • Fixed bug where small squares appeared at the end of each filename listed in the "Transfer Back to PC" list.
    • SpeedSync now checks to make sure a PC target folder is selected before proceeding.
    • Improved tag caching speed by 10%.

  • AudioMorph
    • Fixed bug where the VBR quality setting for LAME transcoding would max out at 9 out of 100.

Release 8.3.4 (2004-01-23)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • AudioMorph Fixes
A number of fixes have been made in the AudioMorph framework. First, Ogg files transcoded to MP3 will now properly transfer as a playable track. Second, the file size and bitrate displayed in the track listing should now properly reflect the characteristics of the transcoded file rather than the original source file.

  • TrueStream and Xtreamer Fixes
Removed blank lines from M3U files generated by TrueStream and Xtreamer in order to preserve compatibility with RealPlayer 10 and other M3U playback implementations. Also fixed TrueStream and Xtreamer so they can properly stream tracks with # symbols in their tags.

  • Playlist Fixes
Fixed bug where after creating just one playlist on the Jukebox, it would not be displayed by Notmad until at least one other playlist was created. In addition, when auto-generating playlists to match your folder structure on the PC, dashes "-" are now used instead of backslashes "\" to delimit each part of the playlist name. This way, such playlists can be transferred back to the PC without error.

  • Device Connection Enhancements
Added new option to Notmad Manager Options to disable the progress window that appears when connecting and disconnecting. Try enabling this option if Notmad Manager hangs after 2 or 3 progress bars while connecting. Also, when trying to connect without your device actually plugged in, Notmad will now properly shuts down the driver after attempting the connection instead of leaving it running.
Release 8.3.3 (2004-01-11)

New Features:

  • Improved TrueStream
This release features much improved TrueStream support, which is the feature that allows you to play tracks on your MP3 player back on the PC. You can now select any playback application installed on your PC that can handle the standard M3U playlist format. This release fixes an XP bug where not all applications were listed, and also an 98/ME bug potentially causing a crash when listing applications or right-clicking on an audio track to play it.

  • Winamp 5 Support
We've verified TrueStream and Xtreamer playback with the new Winamp 5.

  • RealPlayer 10 Support
We've made a change in way our streaming M3U playlist files are generated in order to work around a bug in the new RealPlayer 10. TrueStream and Xtreamer in this release should work properly despite this RealPlayer bug. Thanks to user RDH for pointing this out.

  • Reduced Installer Size
Thanks to a new installer system, we've shrunken our installers by 35% to an average size of 800KB, despite adding more features. How do we pack all these features into just 800KB when other software is tens of megabytes? :-)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • AudioMorph Fixes
Fixed a bug in the last release where AudioMorph could not be enabled in the Config dialog even if the components were properly installed. Also fixed a bug where AudioMorph'ed files transferred to the player would display the original bitrate on-board, even though the file had been successfully shrunken. The correct bitrate and size are now displayed on board the player.

  • Fixed some bugs that could potentially cause the "Connecting..." and "Disconnecting..." progress windows down by the systray to freeze.

Release 8.3.2 (2003-12-30)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved and simplified method for choosing playback software for TrueStream and Xtreamer playback. You can now select any playback software installed on your computer, provided it supports M3U playlists and HTTP streaming.
  • Relocated AudioMorph components to improve cross-product compatibility. You may need to go back to the AudioMorph components page and reinstall the plugins to ensure proper operation.

Release 8.3.1 (2003-12-15)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug where removing track from playlist does not remove track, and generates a new playlist with a garbage name. Playlist track removal should now work properly.
  • Fixed bug limiting MorphLists to 100MB of music. Limit options should work properly now.
  • Fixed bug where "Edit MorphList" option doesn't always appear in context menu.

Release 8.3.0 (2003-12-01)

New Features:

  • MorphList Dynamic Playlists
MorphLists is a new feature in Notmad that allows you to create dynamic playlists for your Jukebox. Just pick a few criteria for the music you want to hear, tell Notmad how long a playlist you want, it will generate it automatically for you. When you get tired of it, the MorphList feature can regenerate a new mix for you with the click of a button. To create a MorphList, just go to Notmad's Playlists folder and right-click.

  • New MuVo and MuVo NX Handling
Starting with this release, the MuVo and MuVo NX are handled differently by Notmad. Their core management code has now been moved into the Notmad Manager instead of Notmad Explorer itself. This should improve stability and performance. When you plug in your MuVo now, Notmad will automatically detect it and display a systray icon. Then just open Notmad as usual to browse your MuVo.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Winamp 2.x Media Library Integration, which was broken in the last release, has been fixed.
  • Various help links within the program have been fixed to point at the right website support pages.

Release 8.2.2 (2003-11-14)

Connection Fixes

  • Improved efficiency of audio track, data file, and playlist counting to eliminate timeouts when first accessing very full Jukeboxes.
  • Increased default initial load-up timeout period for Jukeboxes with very large number of audio tracks, data files, or playlists.
  • Fixed problem where timeouts could falsely raise a version mismatch warning.
  • If timeouts do still occur, provide improved feedback for better diagnostics.
  • Fixed connection bug for MuVo and MuVo NX users who have Windows installed on a drive other than C:.

Transfer Fixes

  • Fixed the display of playlist names and item counts in the Advanced Transfer Management "Prepare for Transfer" dialog. In previous versions, playlists names would show as paths, and all counts would be 1.
  • Fixed bug where transfer dialog asks to automatically create playlists even when there are none to be created.
  • Improved ID3 tag reading.
  • Notmad now automatically trims leading and trailing whitespace from tag fields.
  • File transfers and display in Advanced Transfer Management window are now in filename-sorted order.
  • Transfer dialog now shows file type extensions on filenames displayed in the progress.

Display and Navigation Fixes

  • Fixed bug in the status bar that could cause the display of total and selected data files in a folder to report negative numbers.
  • Fixed some potential crashes when accessing the Device Information folder.
  • Fixed bug where total space used by all data files is over-reported at the top level folder.

Xtreamer and HyperStream Fixes

  • Fixed installer to use port 8045 as the default Xtreamer port for Jukebox 1.
  • Fixed Xtreamer so that it can properly stream and download WAV files.
  • Fixed the HyperStream function within Notmad Explorer so that it appends new entries to the queue of your playback software instead of replacing the entire existing queue, if you have the Windows filetype handling set to use enqueue instead of play.

Release 8.2.1 (2003-10-20)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for Jukebox 1 Version Mismatch Bug
Starting in release 8.1.1, Jukebox 1 Edition users might have seen a bug where when Notmad Explorer is opened, it displays the following error message:

The installed versions of Notmad Explorer and Notmad Manager are different:
    Explorer: 8.x.x Manager:

This message would appear even though the Explorer and Manager components were of the same version. This bug should now be fixed in release 8.2.1. If you ran into this bug in either the Trial or full registered version, please download and install release 8.2.1 and try again. You should be able to access your Jukebox 1 normally now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Fix for potential hang in Notmad transfers immediately following completion of the last file, but before Notmad begins its automatic playlist creation feature. This hang would cause 100% CPU utilization and require killing the process in Windows Task Manager. The situation in which this hang arises should now be eliminated in release 8.2.1.

Release 8.2.0 (2003-10-17)

New Features:

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra Support
Notmad Explorer now supports the recently released Zen Xtra devices in all capacities.

  • Portable Playlist Backups
Notmad can now create backups of the playlists on your Jukebox. The .rpb backup files are extremely compact (less than 25KB for a 1,000 item playlist). You can use these backup files to restore and reconstruct your playlists if they are accidentally changed or deleted. The backups are also portable so you could, for example, send them to friends so they can reconstruct the playlists on their players (assuming they have the same songs already). The backup format is device independent, meaning a backup generated from an Jukebox can be restored to any other device supported by Red Chair Software.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • SpeedSync Improvement
In previous releases, SpeedSync was limited to handling a PC music collection of around 6500 tracks. Larger numbers would produce a 900 code error. This limitation has now been removed.

  • Automatic playlist generation following transfers should now be fixed. In previous releases, tracks that occured in multiple playlists would only be added to one of them on the Jukebox.
  • Restored 'Play on Computer' context menu items for Artists, Albums, and Genres, which were accidentally removed in the last release.
  • Fixed Notmad Xtreamer streaming playback of compilation albums.
  • Fixed bug in Trial Edition installer where it would not create the StartMenu group and shortcuts.
Release 8.1.2 (2003-10-09)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Installer for full edition now has option for whether you want a StartMenu group to be created.
  • Fixed the Jukebox 1 systray icon so that it doesn't appear when other Editions of Notmad are installed.
  • Fixed HyperStream feature so that it works when you use a non-default port number for the Xtreamer server.
  • Fixed a display corruption problem when resizing columns in list view.
  • Fixed crash that sometimes occurs when closing Notmad Manager.

Release 8.1.1 (2003-09-27)

New Features:

  • Spreadsheet View
New "Spreadsheet View" in Notmad Explorer includes gridlines and alternating row coloring to make long track lists easier to read for those who prefer it. The row coloring is customizable. You can configure this mode in the General options. Note that Spreadsheet View appears in all Notmad folders except for the top level and the Device Information folders.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Notweb Explorer Renamed to Notmad Xtreamer
The title speaks for itself. Please let us know if you spot any remaining references to Notweb so that we can update them. Thanks!

  • Case Insensitive Sorting
Notmad Explorer now consistently sorts all music data in a case-insensitive fashion, including in Notweb Xtreamer. This brings Notmad in line with Windows' own sorting, and makes it easier to spot duplicate track titles, artists, and albums.

  • Creative Driver Mode Now Default for Jukebox 1
We have been getting a small but steady flow of reports of people having Jukebox 1 issues with the default JBDirect driver. Since the JBDirect driver is no longer being actively maintained by its author and these problems cannot be fixed, we are making Creative driver mode the default. JBDirect mode will still be available for those who prefer it and don't have problems with it. Also, the 'Rebuild JBDirect Cache' button has been moved into the Notmad Manager options window instead of the Notmad Explorer options window. Please note that this only applies to the Jukebox 1 and not to any other devices.

  • Minor visual improvements including a watermark in the Explorer window, and a larger track number column in playlist view to accomodate 4-digit numbers.
  • Minor fixes and optimizations to the installer.
Release 8.1.0a (2003-09-21)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed minor installation bug not writing all URLs.
  • Restored several options that improve stability on Windows 2000 and XP systems.
Release 8.1.0 (2003-09-20)

New Features:

  • New and Improved Search Interface
Notmad Explorer now features two search interfaces, Simple and Advanced. You'll be familiar with Advanced mode from previous versions, and now Simple allows you to type out search keywords without any other syntax, and Notmad will search in the artist, album, title, and genre fields. It is also easier to initiate a new search with clickable folder items in addition to the context menu items.

  • Driver Version Detection
Notmad can now detect the version number of the Creative device drivers you have installed. This information, which is rather difficult to look up manually in Windows, is useful in determining whether you need to upgrade your drivers. The driver version is displayed in Notmad's Device Information folder.

  • Installer Improvements
The Notmad installer (Full Editions only) now has an option to skip Desktop shortcut icon creation. The uninstalller features a new icon to distinguish it from the Manager.

  • Better Connection Feedback
Notmad Manager now displays a "Connecting..." or "Disconnecting..." mini-window next to the systray icons to give better visual feedback when connecting to or disconnecting from a device.

  • SpeedSync Logging
You can now enable logging for the SpeedSync feature. These logs can be useful to send to us for diagnosis if you run into any problems with SpeedSync such as files with corrupt tags.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed reversal of playlist items when added to other playlists, the Active Queue, or played back on the PC.
  • Removed 5000 track display limit on playlists.

  • Notweb should now properly stream tracks with question marks (?), hash marks (#), and plus signs (+) in their track names.

  • Fixed installation of Send To menu items to work on systems where the user's profile directory has been moved to a non-default location.
  • Fixed installation location for the copyright notice file.
Release 8.0.1 (2003-09-02)

New Features:

  • Tag Editing for MuVo NX
Since the MuVo NX displays the track title from each file's tag, we've added the ability in Notmad to edit the tags of files on-board the MuVo NX.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for HyperStream and Notweb Streaming
Fixed bug in HyperStream and Notweb streaming where incorrect headers were being sent. This bug would affect you differently depending on what MP3 software you use for streaming playback. In some cases, you might not have noticed any problems at all. In other cases, symptoms might have included incomplete tag information display, incorrect bitrate reporting, and the inability to seek throughout the track. These problems were known to have affected Windows Media Player 9 users in particular.

  • Much improved auto-detection of MuVo and MuVo NX devices on Windows 98 and Windows ME.

  • Added additional progress display when the SpeedSync dialog is doing its processing, so it does not appear to freeze for several seconds before appearing.
  • Improved stability and error handling in SpeedSync.

  • Fixed Tunes2Go so that it does not select data files for transfer.
  • For flash-based players, when the memory is empty, Notmad now displays a message suggesting you drag and drop files instead of presenting a blank window.

  • Fixed problem where on some systems the About dialog would not display.
  • Added ellipses to context menu items where appropriate to clearly indicate which menu items trigger further dialogs and which cause a direct action.
Release 8.0.0 (2003-08-18)

New Features:

  • NOMAD Jukebox Zen NX Support
The Zen NX is Creative's new flagship MP3 player, and we've brought all your favorite Notmad and Notweb Explorer features to this new device.

  • NOMAD MuVo NX Support
The MuVo NX adds a number of new capabilities over the original MuVo, but once again, the included software provides very limited control over your powerful new NX. Notmad Explorer is the only software that lets you re-order tracks on board the MuVo, create true playlists on the device, move tracks between them, and reorder tracks within a playlist. Also new in this release is our MuVoMAX filename compression feature, which lets you fit more tracks onto your device. (See below for more MuVoMAX details.)

  • AudioMorph Transcoding
Notmad Explorer now supports on-the-fly transcoding of your audio files between formats and bitrates during transfers. For owners of smaller MuVo, MuVo NX, and Nomad II-series devices, this allows you to fit more tracks onto your player by dynamically lowering the bitrate while leaving your original copy on the computer intact. AudioMorph supports transcoding of MP3 and WMA files with CBR, VBR, and ABR modes and a multitude of options. For owners of Jukebox-class devices, you can store your main music collection on your PC in extremely high-bitrate or uncompressed formats like WAV and then transcode on-the-fly to mid-range compressed bitrates when going mobile. AudioMorph even allows you to keep your PC music library in formats that aren't native to your Jukebox such as Ogg Vorbis. AudioMorph also allows future support for other formats such as FLAC or SHN.

  • SpeedSync Synchronization
SpeedSync is a signficant upgrade over our original One-Touch Synchro feature. SpeedSync is now two-way between your Jukebox and PC and intelligently monitors your sync folders (without any background processing) to provide a huge speed improvement over One-Touch Synchro. And unlike the sync feature in Creative's bundled software, it does not require you to import your PC audio files into their organization scheme and interface.

  • MuVoMAX Filename Compression
The MuVo/MuVo NX filesystem is severely limited in the number of files that can fit in the root folder when using long filenames. When using typical MP3 or WMA filenames that include artist, album, and title, you could be limited to as few as 28 files on your MuVo, regardless of how many megabytes those files actually take up. On a 128MB unit, 28 3MB files use only 65% of your MuVo, wasting 44MB of space! And this space waste only gets worse when you go to a larger MuVo, smaller files (like audio book chapters), or longer filenames. Notmad's unique MuVoMAX feature automatically compresses your filenames so you can fit hundreds of files on your MuVo instead of just dozens. The compression is handled automatically and behind the scenes so that you still get full filenames when viewing tracks in Notmad, and when transferring them back to the PC.

  • Full Multi-Byte Character Set Support
Notmad Explorer now fully supports other languages such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese and others through MBCS. You can transfer files with MBCS filenames to and from the Jukebox, edit MBCS tags, and create playlists with MBCS names.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved MuVo Detection
Notmad now features positive identification for the MuVo and MuVo NX, so it no longer gets confused with other types of USB keydrives or Zip drives. Alternatively, you can go manual and specify the drive letter where your MuVo is located.

Release 7.1.2 (2003-08-12)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug that caused Active Queue playback to stop after one track.
  • New tree-based navigation for options dialogs, making options better organized and easier to find. This will be important as we add a number of new options in future versions.
  • All dialogs now use the system's dialog font instead of MS Sans Serif.

Release 7.1.1 (2003-08-04)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug where after switching to HyperStream mode, you could not switch back to one of the other player-specific TrueStream modes.
  • The use of locale-specific formatted date display has been extended to the last modified time column for data files folders.
  • When displaying a data folder, the status bar now shows the total size of the files in that folder, instead of all data files stored on the Jukebox.
  • The status bar in playlist folders will now display the size and playtime of selected tracks, in addition to the total size of playtime of the playlist when no tracks are selected.

Release 7.1.0 (2003-08-01)

New Features:

  • New TrueStream Playback Mode: HyperStream
TrueStream is the Notmad Explorer feature that allows you to playback songs on your Jukebox through your computer. Up until now, TrueStream has supported Winamp, Media Jukebox, and dBpowerAMP. The new HyperStream mode works with any MP3 software that supports HTTP streaming. This should include all currently supported players as well as Windows Media Player, RealOne, MusicMatch Jukebox, and most other players out there. HyperStream has the additional benefit of eliminating the buffering window that appears in the old TrueStream modes. HyperStream begins playback immediately, with no need for the buffering window, and so is the preferred TrueStream playback mode for devices (Jukeboxes) that support it. Simply make sure that your MP3 player software is set up to handle .m3u playlist files, and select HyperStream mode in the Notmad config dialog. This code is beta, let us know if you run into any problems.

  • Locale-Specific Formatted Date Display
In the previous release we introduced locale-specific formatted number display. In this release we extend locale-specific formatting for date display as well.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • The Notmad installer now detects the language-specific location for the Start Menu Programs folder. Previous installer releases would use "Programs" even on non-English OS's. This should now be fixed.
  • In Advanced Transfer Management, Notmad will now make sure the year and tracknum fields are filled with zeroes instead of garbage for WAV files.

Release 7.0.1 (2003-07-18)

New Features:

  • Locale-Specific Formatted Number Display
Notmad now uses locale-specific information to format numbers for display. Most visibly, Notmad now displays large numbers with digit grouping. For example, "52380" becomes a more readable "52,380.00". The grouping and fractional separators are locale-specific, so for example in Germany, the number would display as "52.380,00".

  • Data Folder Transfer via Send To
In the previous release, automatic data folder hierarchy creation was only available during transfers initiated by drag and drop. Data folders transferred by the Windows Send To menu would end up flattened on the Jukebox. In this release, folders that contain only data files are maintained when transferred using Send To. The folder structure is recreated in the root of the data store.

  • Improved Data Folder Statistics
The top-level data folder statistics now reflect information for the entire data store, and not just the root data folder. This allows you to quickly determine how many total data files are stored on your Jukebox, and how much space they take up.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved Data Folder Recursive Deletion
In the previous release, deleting a large folder hierarchy with many files would cause a timeout (even though the delete would successfully complete), and would not provide any progress feedback. The recursive delete routine has been redesigned to avoid the timeout and provide file by file progress feedback.

  • Fixed context menu "New Folder" function, which would sometimes create the new folder in the root data folder instead of in the folder you specify.
  • Fixed transfer dialog bug that displayed the wrong denominator when showing transfer progress for data files.
  • Fixed bug where folders with periods in their names had all characters after the period stripped during transfer. Folder names with periods are now properly preserved.

  • Fixed the checkboxes that activate the edit fields in the tag editing dialog, which were broken in the last release. This is important for editing tags in batch.
  • Minor fixes to ID3 tag reading library.

  • Fixed left pane so it stays synchronized after data folder operations such as creation, deletion, and renaming.
  • Fixed "Rebuild Left Pane Tree" function so it rebuilds all folders.

  • Fixed Tunes2Go display of free space remaining in each memory segment.
  • Moved icon display options into Notmad Manager Options dialog.

Release 7.0.0 (2003-06-20)

New Features:

  • Full Data Folders Support for Jukebox 2, 3, and Zen
We are proud to announce that Notmad Explorer is the first and only application to support both audio and data file/folder management within a single interface. Data folders support requires version 1.21.01a or higher of the Jukebox drivers. The specific features initially supported are:

    • Full display and navigation of data folders structure stored on Jukebox.
    • Full folder navigation in Notweb Explorer interface as well.
    • File attributes and modification times are preserved on transfer to and from Jukebox, and are displayed in Notmad.
    • Recursive folder transfer to and from Jukebox via drag and drop.
    • Move files and folders around between folders on the Jukebox using drag and drop.
    • Rename folders and files.
    • Normal Windows filetypes and icons are displayed.
    • File deletion and recursive folder deletion.

Since folder support is new, it may take a release or two to shake out completely, so please let us know if you run into any problems. Please note that folders are not supported for the original Jukebox and Jukebox C because there is no folder support in their firmware.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Jukebox 1 Creative Driver Mode Fixees
These fixes only apply to those using the original Jukebox or Jukebox C in Creative driver mode (as opposed to JBDirect mode). In previous releases, switching to Creative driver mode would cause the "Notweb HTTP Options" tab to disappear from the "Notmad Manager Options" dialog, and also cause transfers to the Jukebox to hang or fail. Both of these problems should now be fixed.

  • Fixed bug where attempting to edit the tags of multiple tracks at once would cause a crash.
  • Disconnecting from the Jukebox now clears the library metadata cache, which should reduce memory usage when not connected, and also solve some caching problems wherein Notweb Explorer does not display newly added artists, albums, or genres.

Release 6.8.8 (2003-06-18)

New Features:

  • Switched to a new installer system to provide a friendlier interface and future support for non-English language installations.
  • New option to turn off Notmad's various 'operation complete' confirmation messages.
  • Notweb Explorer now supports the use of XML declaration tags: <?xml version="1.0"?>. This allows you to create Notweb skins using XML files as well as HTML files.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed crash when viewing Device Information folder for Nomad II devices.
  • The "Do not ask to automatically create playlists after transfer" option now also applies to the Playlist tab in the Advanced Transfer Management dialog.
  • Added the use of the hourglass cursor in more places to better indicate when Notmad is busy with an operation.

  • Fixed bug where editing the Notweb username/password file would not take effect.

  • Fixed Win98 bug where the "Load Playlist" button in the Tunes2Go dialog would not do anything when clicked.
  • Fixed Tunes2Go bug where the "Load Playlist" button would not use the directory set using the "Set Folder" button.
  • Fixed Win98 bug where the dialog to choose your default web browser for Notweb and Help would not appear.

Release 6.8.7 (2003-06-06)

New Features:

  • Multi-Browser Support
Notmad Explorer and Notweb Explorer can now be configured to use a default web browser of your choice instead of just Internet Explorer. All browsers are supported including popular ones such as Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera. The configured default web browser is used for launching the Notweb Explorer interface, accessing the help and support resources on our website, and viewing SQL reports. You can choose your browser on the General tab of the Configuration dialog.

  • Improved Multi-Tag Editing
Notmad's tag editing dialog box now features new checkboxes next to each field, allowing you to select only certain fields to be modified in the selected tracks. This means you can now do something like select a bunch of tracks with all different albums and artists, and then change only the year field on all the selected tracks. This change applies to both the tag editing dialog in the main Notmad interface and the editing dialog in Advanced Transfer Management.

  • Improved WAV File Handling
In previous releases, WAV files uploaded to the Jukebox using Notmad would not have its track length set. This means that while you could play WAV files back on the Jukebox, the progress display would not be accurate, and you would not be able to ff or rev. Notmad now automatically detects the track length and sets it on the Jukebox so the progress display is correct and you can ff and rev.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed installer bug where the "Start In" folder for Notmad's Desktop shortcuts referred to a temporary directory, preventing that directory from being deleted.

  • Fixed bug where tracks with tab characters in their names would not transfer back to the PC. Notmad now removes tab characters on the fly.
  • Fixed bug preventing tracks with question marks in their names from being streamed properly in Notweb.

  • Fixed a crash that occurs on some systems after a Tunes2Go transfer completes.
  • Fixed bug on Win98 systems where the "Save as Playlist" button in the Tunes2Go dialog would not do anything when clicked.
  • Fixed CardReader bug that caused tracks transferred to be displayed on the Nomad II with a numeric title instead of the proper long filename title.

Release 6.8.6 (2003-05-31)

New Features:

  • Notweb Skins Gallery
The Default and Barebones skins now link directly to the new Notweb Skins Gallery. From the Gallery you can download and install new skins with just one click. Once a skin is installed, you can immediately switch between all skins.

  • Important: New Skins Location
The location where Notweb skins are stored has now been moved out of the Notmad program folder. This way, skins you may be working on and ones you download from the Gallery will not overwritten when you upgrade Notmad. This release, 6.8.6, should copy your existing skins to the new location during installation, but just to be safe, make a backup copy of any skins you may be working on first. The installer will place a shortcut to the new location in the program folder, named skins, so you can still navigate to the skins folder in essentially the same way.

  • The location where the HTTP username/password file has also been moved. You still edit the file the same way, by using the button in the Notweb HTTP Options dialog.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • New option to keep transfer dialog open after transfer completes only if one or more files were skipped for some reason. With this option enabled, the transfer dialog will auto-close unless a file was skipped.
  • Transferring files from Nomad to a UNC network path now halts with a warning message. In previous versions, it would incorrectly copy the file to an equivalent path on the C: drive. In a future release we will add full support for copying to UNC network paths.
  • Playlist Index feature fixed so that it displays all tracks on first viewing. In previous releases, the first viewing would only show one track and the others would only appear after a refresh.

  • Made Active Queue qcmd arguments case insensitive.
  • Added streaming playback link to Active Queue folder in Barebones Notweb skin.
  • Added closing </form> tag to dynamic reskinning form in Barebones and Default Notweb skins.
  • Made more helpful the message displayed by Notweb when no valid skin is selected.
  • Fixed Notweb access logging so characters in the names of streamed tracks are not converted to SGML entites.
  • Modified Active Queue control buttons in the Default and Barebones skins to work in the PocketPC IE web browser. (Thanks Alan S.)

  • JBDirect DLL is now installed into the Notmad program folder, which should work better for users with non-C: drive installations.

Release 6.8.5a (2003-05-15)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Added "Stream All" link to Active Queue page in Notweb Explorer.
  • Minor cleanup of Active Queue page layout in Notweb Explorer.

Release 6.8.5 (2003-05-14)

New Features:

  • Active Queue Support in Notweb Explorer
This is a feature that many users have been asking for, and now it's finally here. Active Queue support in Notweb Explorer actually makes possible three very cool new features:

    • Playback Through Jukebox: In Notmad Explorer, you can play back music on your Jukebox through speakers attached to the Jukebox. Now, you can do the same thing through the Notweb Explorer webpage interface as well.

    • Remote Jukebox Control: If you have a home network, you can now connect your Jukebox to your stereo system and then control playback from any computer in your house through the Notweb interface. If you have a wireless network and a PDA that runs a web browser, your PDA is now a high-powered remote control for your Jukebox!

    • Custom Streaming Sets: Although the Active Queue is primarily used for playback on the Jukebox, you can also use it as a way of building a custom play set on the fly for streaming playback.

  • Dynamic Notweb Reskinning
You can now change the current Notweb skin directly from the Notweb webpage interface. This means you do not need to go into the systray icon menu, and you can change skins away from your computer.

  • Notweb HTTP access log now includes the username of the person accessing the pages when username/password access is enabled.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed right-pane sort by column header, which wasn't working in the last release.
  • Restored display of how much space is used by data files at the top level of Notmad.
  • Fixed drag and drop of data files into the Data Files folder in Notmad Explorer. In previous releases, you had to drag to a blank area of the right-pane. You can now drag over other files and it will simply add it to the folder.
  • Fixed status bar display of file information in data folder.
  • Improved the way the DL links for data files in Notweb pages are constructed.

  • For security reasons, the Notweb HTTP access log has been removed from the main skin. You can now access the log locally through the Notweb HTTP Options dialog.
  • Fixed Notweb HTTP access logging, which was not properly displaying names of tracks being streamed.
  • Notweb tag code included into another page now has access to the variables set in the master page.
  • Fixed Notweb audio streaming so it doesn't leave temporary files lying around.
  • Notweb search results display is now sorted.
  • Changed Notweb search functionality into a LOOP command.

  • New option to stop Notmad from asking you want to automatically create playlists after each transfer.

Release 6.8.1 (2003-05-05)

New Features:

  • New Notweb Explorer Skinning System
We've completely overhauled the mark-up tags used to write Notweb Explorer skins. It should now be much simpler to understand and read the tags, and to create your own Notweb skins. This overhaul also adds a new "include" directive that lets you insert repeating template code into other pages, giving skin designers much more power and flexibility. We've created a new skin called "Barebones" and included it with Notmad to be used as a tutorial in learning how to create skins. The OmniTome documentation on creating skins will be updated shortly to reflect the new mark-up tags and syntax. If you have created your own skins based on the old tag syntax, you can continue to use them until you've migrated them to the new syntax by enabling the "Old Skin Mode" option in the Notweb HTTP Options dialog.

  • Significant speed-up in page load time in Notweb Explorer.
  • Notweb HTTP log now accessible using a button in the Notweb HTTP Options dialog.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug in 6.8.0 where upgrading would cause existing Notmad settings and options to be reset.
  • Fixed bug in 6.8.0 where left pane tree would lose mouse focus after navigating to a new folder.
  • The details link in Notweb search results now creates a popup window, making it consistent with other track list pages.
  • For clarity, changed all Notweb page references to "Play" to "Stream" instead.

Release 6.8.0 (2003-04-29)

New Features:

  • Winamp 2.9x Media Library Integration
In version 2.9, Winamp introduced a new feature called Media Library, which is a generalized environment for browsing items that can be played back in Winamp. Red Chair Software is pleased to be the first developer to release Media Library integration for portable MP3 players. This Notmad Explorer release makes it possible from the Media Library to browse and playback tracks from your Jukebox, Jukebox C, Jukebox 2, Jukebox 3, and Jukebox Zen. To learn more about how to use Media Library integration, see section 6.3.1 of the Notmad OmniTome.

  • New Playlist Support for Windows Media Player 9.0 and RealOne
Notmad Explorer now supports the .WPL and .RMP playlist formats used by WMP9 and RealOne. Notmad now supports .M3U, .PLS, .B4S, .BPL, .WPL, and .RMP. To import a playlist, simply drag and drop it to Notmad Explorer.

  • Improved Keyboard-Based Tag Editing
We've made several changes that makes editing multiple tags in sequence easier when done with the keyboard only. After selecting a track, you can now call up the tag editing dialog using the ALT-Enter keyboard shortcut. After the edit is complete, Notmad now returns you to the same spot in the track list rather than bringing you back to the beginning.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved Notmad vs. Manager version checking.
  • Fixed Notweb bug where "Play All Tracks in this Folder" link on the Albums under Artist pages did not work when ampersands are present in the title.

Release 6.7.6 (2003-04-21)

New Features:

  • Creative Driver Mode for Jukebox 1
Lately, a few users have been reporting connection problems with the JBDirect driver and the original Jukebox 1. Since the JBDirect driver is no longer being actively developed by its author, we have introduced a dual driver mode feature for Jukebox 1 support. If you are having difficulties connecting to your Jukebox 1, go the Notmad Manager Options item in the systray menu and enable the Creative driver mode, which should work better in this situation.

  • Playlist Index
In release 6.7.2, we introduced a new column in Audio Tracks view that gave the number of playlists each track belongs to. This caused a problem with playlist support, so it was removed in 6.7.5. The feature is now back, an in an even more powerful form. Playlist Index is a new folder under the top-level Playlists folder that shows, for each track on your Jukebox, the number of playlists each track belongs to, and the names of those playlists. It is, literally, a playlist index.

  • Bitrate Reporting for Jukebox 2/3/Zen
In previous versions, we could not provide bitrate information for these devices because it is not supported by the Creative driver. All tracks showed "VBR". Because bitrate functionality may not get added to the driver, we've decided to add the ability to calculate the bitrate internally, to at least give an approximation. Each track now has bitrate information, but it may not always be 100% accurate.

  • View settings (small icon, large icon, list, details) are now persistent and saved independently for audio and data folders.
  • New option to detect and skip files with corrupt tag data, which can prevent Notmad from hanging.
  • New option to disable warning when Notmad detects a removable drive that may or may not be a MuVo.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed time synchronization and display for Jukebox 1.
  • Fixed bug where CardReader was not physically removing files from the SmartMedia card when deleting items.
  • Fixed bug where creating a playlist from the Active Queue did not respect the queue ordering.
  • Fixed large icon display mode. Previous versions showed blank icons in this mode for audio files.

Release 6.7.5b (2003-04-14)

Bug Fixes:

  • Restored "Right-pane auto-focus" option.
  • Fixed Jukebox time synchronization so that it properly accounts for timezone and daylight savings.
  • Fixed drag and drop reordering of playlists and MuVo contents.

Release 6.7.5 (2003-04-11)

New Features:

  • Systray icons now indicate that a device is connected by lighting up the LCD in the icon instead of using the red 'x'.
  • Notmad Explorer and Notmad Manager now verify their version numbers against each other, warning you if you have an incomplete upgrade.
  • Full folder path is now displayed in the Explorer address bar instead of just the current folder name.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed handle leak in previous versions that could cause Notmad to crash after long periods of usage, or during long transfers or sync operations. This problem affected Notmad on all operating systems, but was more acute on Windows 98 and ME.
  • Fixed timing error that could cause some tags to be misread during large transfers.
  • Fixed potential hang when Notmad first opens if there are corrupt playlists on-board the Jukebox.

  • New icons and improved descriptions for error messages displayed in the right pane.
  • When error messages are displayed in the right pane, the column is widened to make the whole message readable.
  • Error messages are no longer duplicated and displayed in the left pane.
  • Changed systray menu item labels to make them more distinguishable and consistent with Windows conventions.
  • Changed units of data file size display from MB to KB, making Notmad consistent with Windows Explorer.
  • For data files, made the minimum displayable filesize 1KB instead of 0KB, making Notmad consistent with Windows Explorer.
  • All Notmad dialogs are now properly modal so that they don't get lost underneath windows.
  • The Transfer dialog no longer forces itself to stay on top of all other windows after transfer is complete.
  • Fixed bug where clicking on left pane folders sometimes does not cause the right pane to update with the new folder's contents.
  • Fixed bug in previous versions where you had to select items twice in the right pane before performing further operations that involved hitting a key, such as Delete, or Shift- and Control- multi-selecting.
  • Removed the right-pane autofocus option and made it permanent.
  • Added hourglass cursor display to some of the longer operations.

  • Fixed bug in 6.7.2 where playlists contents were not displayed in Notweb.
  • Notweb no longer displays locked tracks in playlists, which are not streamable anyway. Playlists are now consistent with other folders in this respect.

Release 6.7.2 (2003-04-06)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • New column in Audio Tracks view indicating how many playlists each track belongs to. This can be useful in finding tracks that haven't been added to any playlist yet.
  • Playlists in the left pane now display in alphabetical order.
  • The MuVo Edition now displays new track length and bitrate columns.
  • You can now right-click on the Active Queue folder itself and turn it into a playlist.
  • The information displayed in the Notmad Explorer status bar now includes number of items, total size, total playtime (when applicable), and free space remaining. Total playtime is displayed for Active Queue, Playlists, Artist, Albums, and Genres folders.

  • Fixed crash when dragging items past the end of the list, such as when reordering MuVo contents or Jukebox playlists.
  • Fixes that should reduce the occurrence of the bug where Notmad displays "This is device is not a...it is a...".
  • Jukebox tab in Config dialog now displays default formatting templates if they've never been set before.
  • Jukebox tab in Config dialog now warns if user forgets to include file extension in transfer to PC filename generation format template.

Bug Fixes:

  • Removed the extraneous "saving" message when changing your TrueStream player in the configuration dialog.

Release 6.7.1 (2003-03-29)

New Features

  • You can now add whole Album, Artist, and Genre folders to playlists using the context menu.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

Release 6.7.0 (2003-03-26)

New Features:

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • General User Interface
    • Fixed all online help buttons to point to the right pages.
    • When tracks are deleted, they are now also removed from the Last Transfer and Search Results lists, so that you don't end up trying to perform operations on deleted tracks.
    • Active Queue track numbering is now 1-based instead of 0-based.

  • Playlist Handling
    • Added more randomness to the shuffle feature.
    • Fixed bug in playlist auto-generation and importation that caused tracks to be taken from the wrong album from the same artist.
    • Importing a playlist when you already have a playlist of the same name will no longer create a duplicate. There is a new option to either leave the existing playlist alone, or overwrite it.
    • Fixed bug in playlist auto-generation on the original Jukebox that caused incorrect tracks to be added.
    • Fixed crash when moving playlist track to the first position on original Jukebox.

  • Tag Handling and Advanced Transfer Management
    • The options for how tags are handled during transfer are now organized into radio buttons, make them much easier to understand.
    • Fixed the tag auto-fill feature, which was not using the user-provided string.
    • Fixed bug preventing the Comment field from being blanked by the user in the Advancted Transfer Manager dialog.

  • Notweb Explorer
    • Made changes that should prevent your web browser from caching Notweb pages and masking changes you've made to Jukebox contents.
    • Fixed bug on original Jukebox where after disabling Notweb you could no longer get back to the options dialog to re-enable it.
    • Added the artist name under the album name on album under artist Notweb pages.

  • Transfers and Transfer Dialog
    • "View Logs" button now opens a menu instead of a dialog, to give quicker and easier access to logs.
    • Fixed transfer dialog auto-close option, which did previously work in some situations.
    • Fixed drag and drop from Jukebox back to PC so that illegal filename characters are removed.
    • Fixed drag and drop from Jukebox back to PC so that folder structure is properly created.
    • Removed illegal filename characters from the filenames displayed in the Transfer dialog.
    • Fixed bug where transfer logs could not be accessed from the "View Logs" button because they are locked.

Release 6.6.0a (2003-03-11)

Bug Fixes:

  • In Release 6.6.0, the wrong "About Notmad Manager" dialog is displayed and it cannot be dismissed. If the dialog is opened, closing Notmad Manager causes a crash. This is fixed in 6.6.0a and the correct dialog should be displayed. This only applies to Jukebox 1 and Nomad II/IIc/IIMG.

Release 6.6.0 (2003-03-09)

New Features:

  • Device Information
A new top-level folder that gives information about your Nomad including device name, owner name, time and date, hardware and firmware versions, and the various Notmad features supported in hardware. You can also right-click in this folder to change the owner name as well as synchronize the Nomad's clock to your PC's clock.

  • New Advanced Transfer Management Options
A new context menu option to copy the artist tag field and prepend it to the title tag field. This is useful for setting up tags for compilation albums and was suggested by John G. Also, a new context menu option to copy the track number tag field and prepend it to the title tag field. This is useful for differentiating the beginning part of very long, similar track titles so the Jukebox does not mistake them for the same track. Useful for classical albums that have long track titles. Suggested by Paul G.

  • Active Queue items can now by directly copied to playlists using the context menu.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Workaround for Creative Driver Installer Bug
The first fix is not actually a fix for a bug in Notmad, but a workaround for a bug in the Creative driver installer package. Some versions of the driver installer do not properly register all the DLL files that are part of the driver, including one that Notmad relies on. This would cause Notmad Manager to crash or complain about the driver not being installed when you click to connect your Nomad. To work around this problem, the Notmad Explorer 6.6.0 installer registers this DLL itself so it will work even if you installed one of the buggy driver versions. See section 2.1.1 in the Notmad OmniTome for more details, of if this release does not seem to fix the problem for you.

  • Improved Notweb Compatibility with Firewall Software
In previous versions, invoking Notweb Explorer could cause Notmad Manager to crash. This was due to a conflict with network driver filters typically installed by firewall products such as McAfee Firewall. Release 6.6.0 should no longer crash when used on a PC with this type of firewall software installed.

  • The transfer dialog "Auto-Close" option is fixed and should work properly now.
  • Notmad will no longer do a complete refresh after a transfer to the PC or a Play on Computer operation, which would cause you to lose your place in previous releases.
  • Notmad will now properly create the folder structures you specify in the filename template when using drag and drop. Previously, the folders would only be created if you used "Copy to Computer".

Release 6.5.0 (2003-02-22)

New Features:

  • Notweb Explorer Improvements
In release 6.3.0, we enhanced the albums and artists folder organization in Notmad Explorer. In this release, we've brought this new improved organization over to the Notweb interface as well. This means you can now browse albums under their respective artists, which is something many users have asked for. We've also changed the album title to include the name of the artist. Streaming speed should also be improved when replaying tracks.

  • Advanced Transfer Management Improvements
On the Playlist tab, you can now select and deselect all playlists at once. On the Audio tag, you can now regenerate tag information from either the source file's embedded tag, or by reparsing the source file's filename.

  • New option to automatically close Transfer dialog at the end of the transfer.
  • New option to exclude WAV files from transfers.
  • New playlist context menu options allowing playlist tracks to be copied to other playlists.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Notweb Explorer
    • Fixed bug that made Notweb folders with ampersands in their names unplayable.
    • Fixed filenames generated when downloading data files through Notweb.
    • Fixed potential crash when user makes syntax errors in custom Notweb skins.
  • Artist Folders
    • Restored "Copy to Computer" menu option for artist folders that went missing in release 6.3.0.
    • Restored artist renaming in context menu.
    • Restored artist folder deletion in context menu.
  • Playlists
    • Automatic post-transfer playlist generation should now work consistently, and also not timeout after 30 seconds.
    • Notmad now prevents you from accidentally dropping a playlist item back to the playlist, creating a duplicate.
  • Advanced Transfer Management
    • On Audio tab, list box now maintains its scroll position after an edit instead of jumping back to the top.
    • Fixed "Skip All Data Files" option, which was not working previously.
  • Transfer to Nomad
    • Additional fixup to old-style WMA tag handling (off-by-one error).
    • Notmad no longer tries to read tags from data or WAV files, which wastes time.
    • Transfer dialog now updates progress even when skipping files.
  • Transfer to PC
    • Improved tag handling code so it doesn't lock up on some corrupt MP3 files.
    • Notmad now notifies you if you try to transfer a locked track that it will be skipped.
    • Fixed filename generation for tracks with tag fields containing illegal Windows filename characters like slashes.
    • Fixed bug causing duplicate folders to be created on the PC when transferring folders of tracks from the Jukebox.

Release 6.4.2a (2003-02-07)

Bug Fixes:

  • Release 6.4.2 introduced a bug in Nomad Jukebox (original) support. After certain operations completed, such as deleting a file or transferring to the PC, Notmad Manager would crash, requiring it to be restarted. This bug seemed to only affect some systems but not others. So if you were using 6.4.2 with your Nomad Jukebox, you might or might not have had this problem. If you did, please upgrade to 6.4.2a.

Release 6.4.2 (2003-01-27)

New Features:

  • Support for Nomad IIc 128MB model.
  • Folders are now created on transfer to PC. This means you can now control the folder structure created by Notmad during transfer to PC by adding slashes to the transfer to PC filename format. For example, "%A\%L\%T.%C" will create artists folders which contain album folders which contain individual tracks.
  • Significantly improved MuVo transfer speeds under Windows 2000 and XP.
  • New option to disable recursive subfolder traversal during transfers.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved MuVo detection code to reduce possibility of misdetecting a Zip drive as a MuVo.
  • Added ability to distinguish between MuVo not connected and MuVo recently formatted.
  • Fixed installer bug that put Notmad Manager shortcut in Startup group even when it is not installed, as in the MuVo Edition.
  • Improved stability and integrity of transfers to PC for Jukebox 1.
  • Fixed Jukebox 1 bug giving premature "Memory Full" messages.
  • Fixed bug where setting the transfer to PC pause length would not stick.
  • Fixed bug where manually typing in One-Touch Synchro directory would not stick.
  • Further enhancements to WMA tag reading compliance (particularly track number reading).
  • Notmad now skips locked tracks during transfer to PC instead of warning and aborting.
  • Notmad now skips locked tracks during tag editing to avoid corruption.
  • Changed old screaming woman icon to Red Chair logo.

Release 6.4.1 (2003-01-20)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Modified MuVo Edition so that it does not rely on Notmad Manager any more. This means no more extraneous systray icon, and an easier time unplugging the MuVo.
  • The Notmad installer and uninstaller can now automatically shutdown Notmad Manager before proceeding so you don't have to do it manually.
  • General stability improvements.

Release 6.4.0 (2003-01-19)

New Features:

  • Full Nomad MuVo Integration
After a successful beta test of Tunes2Go for MuVo, we decided to introduce full integration of the MuVo into Notmad Explorer. This means your MuVo is auto-detected and displayed in My Computer as a device. Unlike the drive-letter access you normally use, the MuVo Edition of Notmad displays your tracks in the order of playback, and is the only software that lets you instantly reorder tracks already on-board the MuVo. In addition, all the great Tunes2Go features are still available, as well as integration with Notmad Arena.

  • The format of displayed track names can now be fully customized using templates.
  • The format of filenames generated when transferring files back to the PC can now be fully customized using templates.
  • New options for ignoring MP3, WMA, and data files during transfers, for users who never use certain types of files.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Removed the SQL Reports tab from the Logs and Reports dialog in the Nomad II Edition, which was non-functional anyway.
  • Extended time-out period for Nomad II formatting so larger devices like the Nomad II MG LE don't time-out during formats.

Release 6.3.0 (2003-01-12)

New Features:

  • Advanced Transfer Management (Beta)
With release 6.3.0, we have completely revamped our transfer system to give you total control over tagging and minimize unecessary interruptions during transfers. Advanced Transfer Managed lets you specify everything Notmad needs to know about a transfer before beginning. This feature is still beta code. To enable it, check the "Enable Advanced Transfer Management" option in the Config dialog. Here are the features available now:

    • When tag information is not available, it is parsed from the filename and path.
    • Matrix view showing which tracks for which you'll need to fix tags.
    • Power batch tools to edit all tag information you want Notmad to use before transfer begins, including field swapping, field copying, and track number auto-fill.
    • Tag WriteBack, which optionally writes all edits you make back to the original source file on the PC. Write-back V1, V2, or both. Also handles WMA tag format.
    • Preview automatic playlist creation.
    • Tag field whitespace trimming.

More features will be added to the Advanced Transfer Management in future versions.

  • Improved Artists and Albums Organization
The old option called "Show albums under artists" is now gone. The mode is now permanent. In each artist folder you will find all of that artist's albums, plus a pseudo-album containing all tracks by that artist. Unlike the old mode, in 6.3.0 there is also still a top-level folder containing all albums. We've also fixed a bug so that when you delete an album under an artist, it will only delete tracks with that album name and by that artist, instead of all tracks with that album name by any artist.

  • New "Last Transfer" Folder
This new top-level folder contains all the tracks added to your Nomad during the last transfer, making it more convenient to add them to playlists or play them on your Jukebox immediately.

  • Added ability to right-click (as well as left-click) on context menu items through Notmad.
  • Faster navigation between Internal Memory and SmartMedia Card on Nomad II's.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug in 6.2.0 and original Jukebox Edition where transferring to PC, Notweb streaming, and Play on Computer would hang after 3 or 4 transfers.
  • Fixed bug preventing last 5MB of free space on a Nomad II from being filled.
  • Changed CardReader internal filename generation to hopefully avoid tracks being displayed as numbers on the Nomad II.
  • Fixed bug causing progress to be misreported when adding more tracks to a running transfer dialog.
  • Fixed navigation to FM Tuner folder in Nomad II Edition. In 6.2.0, double-clicking it could launch the help page instead.
  • Fixed bug that required you to select items in the right-pane twice before performing an operation on them.
  • One more fix for WMA tag track number reading for WMA9 encoded files.
  • Fixed bug so that you can now edit the comment and genre fields to make them blank.

  • Removed mysterious "blah" dialog.
  • Restored proper display sort of FM Tuner presets, which broke in 6.2.0.
  • Changed transfer dialog references to "Mbps" to "Mbit/s" for clarity.
  • Changed "COM Corruption" error to be more helpful and indicate that driver is not yet installed.
  • Fixed playlist deletion in the left pane.
  • Fixed artist, album, and genre deletion in the left pane.
  • Fixed crash when trying to use Tunes2Go and Nomad II is not actually connected.
  • Enlarged transfer throughput counters to avoid overflow for large transfers.

  • Fixed Notmad Manager crash upon closing the Notweb options dialog that Jukebox 1 owners may have seen.
  • Fixed installer, which was not creating sendtocr.exe properly in 6.1.2.
  • Eliminated random track icons that would sometimes appear, especially with slower USB connections.
  • On transfer files to the PC, Notmad will now overwrite the target file if it exists.
  • Fixed transfer bug with Jukebox 1 transfers where if the Jukebox is full, Notmad would hang instead of reporting that memory is full.

Release 6.1.2a (2002-12-08)

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed Nomad II Edition installer, which was not creating the sendtosm.exe file that is required to transfer files to external memory.
  • Removed track number dialog box that pops up when transferring WMA files.

Release 6.1.2 (2002-12-08)

Enhancements:

  • "Copy to Computer" function is now also available on folders like Artists, Albums, and Genres.
  • Added proper track sorting for multi-artist compilation albums in Notmad and Notweb.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a problem with wrong track data appearing intermittently.
  • Removed blank-name Artist, Album, and Genre folders that appeared in the last release.
  • Fixed bitrate and length calculation code, which was erroneously reporting zero for some MP3 files.
