Release 8.8.3 (2006-08-02)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed repeating activation issue.

Release 8.7.3a (2005-11-24)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed minor connection problem.

Release 8.6.3 (2004-11-11)

New Features:

  • Xtreamer Security Improvements
For security reasons, usernames and passwords are now required when a remote computer accesses Xtreamer. Therefore, you must set up at least one remote access account before Xtreamer can be accessed from other computers. Local access does not require username and password. We have added a account management interface to make it simple and fast to create, edit, and delete accounts. Access this new account manager by by right-clicking the Riorad icon in the systray and selecting "Riorad Manager Options". In addition, we have disabled authentication on the audio streams themselves to improve streaming compatibility with playback applications that do not handle HTTP authentication well or at all. You now only need to authenticate once when accessing the initial Xtreamer homepage.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved ID3 Tag Handling
In the previous release, MP3 files with a complete ID3V1 tag but a blank ID3V2 tag would not be read properly. This release should properly handle such MP3's and read the information from the V1 tag and ignore the blank V2 tag.

  • Fixed default Xtreamer skin for proper display alignment in Firefox/Mozilla browsers.

Release 8.6.2 (2004-10-21)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved VBR MP3 Analysis
We have improved our bitrate analysis code to properly calculate the play length of VBR MP3 files encoded by certain specific encoders. If you have VBR files that do not play for their full duration on your player, please re-transfer them using this release.

  • Fixed bug where files would not transfer to PC properly if one or more of the file's tag fields ended in a period.
  • Robustness improvements in transfer to PC functions.
  • Xtreamer can now be configured to use port numbers up to 99999 instead of just 9999.
  • Fixed Explorer problem where status bar file information would lag behind by one file when navigating up and down the file list using the keyboard.

Release 8.6.1 (2004-09-17)

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug in 8.6.0 where Playlist Index did not display the correct playlist membership information.
  • Fixed instability in playlist merging function.
  • Fixed a tag reading bug causing accented UTF-8 characters in ID3V2 tags to be corrupted when an ID3V1 tag is also present in the MP3 file.

Release 8.5.9 (2004-07-26)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Further stability improvements to the TrueStream and Xtreamer streaming mechanisms.

Release 8.5.8 (2004-07-19)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility
Riorad has been tested with the latest beta release of the upcoming Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Microsoft Windows XP. If you encounter any problems after installing SP2, please contact technical support and let us know!

  • Improved Xtreamer Performance
In previous releases, streaming playback could hang at the end of a track on some systems, requiring the Manager or the computer to be restarted. This release features an improved streaming mechanism that should resolve this problem. Also fixed a bug where Xtreamer could use an unnecessary amount of temp space in certain circumstances.

  • Fixed problem with Explorer running at High priority instead of Normal when launched from the systray icon.

  • Increased streaming limit to five tracks in trial edition.
  • Removed unnecessary warning message about Winamp integration when changing TrueStream options.
  • Minor installer improvements.

Release 8.5.7 (2004-06-06)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • New, Fully Integrated File Type Exclusion
The file format exclusion options for transfers have been improved to allow the exclusion of all file formats supported by the player, not just the limited options available in previous releases. These are the options available in the Transfers section of the Options dialog. The new options are also properly integrated with AudioMorph and SpeedSync as well as normal transfers from the PC.

  • Improved Tag Writeback Robustness
In previous releases, tag writeback for transfers back to the PC could hang on some files with invalid or corrupt tags. The tag writeback facility has been improved to more gracefully handle such files and avoid hangs during transfers. If you still run into files with tags that cause problems, let us know, we may want to take a look at the file.

Release 8.5.4 (2004-05-03)

New Features:

  • Major Enhancements to SpeedSync
The SpeedSync feature has received a major overhaul. First, the tag cache is now based on a new mechanism that should improve scalability and stability, especially for users with large sync sets. Scanning for new or modified files in the sync set has been sped up by 10x. The SpeedSync dialog also features new, improved feedback indicators for the user to monitor progress of the sync comparison. More appropriate device icons are also displayed to match your specific player. Long pathnames displayed in the results tabs have also been compressed to improve readability. Finally, SpeedSync now performs the same automatic tag filling as the transfer mechanism does, so that files with missing tag fields are no longer sync'ed over and over again.

  • Tag Writeback on Transfer to PC
As you may or may not know, tag edits you make on board your player are made to a separate tag database and are not written to the files themselves on board the player. This new feature takes the changes you've made to the database and writes them back to the actual music files themselves when you transfer them back to the PC. This should also improve the behavior of SpeedSync, so that it no longer repeatedly syncs tracks whose tags you've edited on board the player. This writeback feature currently supports MP3 and WMA files. Tag writeback for other formats will come in future releases. This option is enabled by default. You can disable it using a checkbox in the "Tag Handling" section of the Options dialog.

  • Albums by this Artist from Amazon.com
This new feature enhances your music-listening experience by helping you find albums you might not know about by artists you enjoy. Right-click on any track on your player and select "Albums by this Artist". This will bring up a dialog that lists all released albums by the artist you clicked on. Albums you already have in your collection are denoted with a special icon, allowing you to browse and explore other albums by that artist that you don't have yet. Double-click on any album for more details, track list, commentary, and song samples, courtesy of Amazon.com.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Major Track Display Speedup
The display and refresh speed of all track folders has been increased by 100%. This will be particularly noticeable when in the Audio Tracks folder of a moderately to fully loaded Karma. This should also make it faster and easier to edit tags on such Karmas.

  • Streaming Improvements for Windows Media Player
In previous releases, some users had difficulties streaming from Riorad to WMP9. Users would see WMP9 attempting to connect to the stream by ultimately time-out. We have made some improvements to the streaming mechanism which should resolve this problem for the users who experienced it.

  • Fixed Simple Search Mode in Xtreamer
The behavior of Simple Search mode in Xtreamer was inadvertently changed during the last round of SQL Engine improvements. The original behavior was to match substrings. The last round of SQL Engine improvements changed its behavior to strict string matching. The behavior has been restored to substring matching. The other modes and types of search were not affected.

  • Improvements to AudioMorph WMA VBR Encoding
In previous releases, AudioMorph would allow you to select 100% quality setting for WMA VBR, which is not actually a valid setting for the encoder. This has been changed to the valid value of 98%. We have also added an additional 90% quality setting for you to use.

  • Fixed Data File Exclusion Bug
We've fixed a bug where when the 'Skip Data Files' option is selected, audio formats such as Ogg and FLAC would also be mistakenly skipped.

  • A more appropriate device icon is now displayed in the transfer dialog.
  • now uses the system-wide Windows setting for default web browser for all web browsing tasks. You no longer need to specify a browser in the Options dialog. This setting is used for browsing Xtreamer, accessing online help, and other tasks.
  • In previous releases, transferring tracks with one or more blank tag fields could create folder names containing only spaces. This would happen if your filename generation template specified folder structure using a tag field whose value for a track was blank or only spaces. In this case, the folder would be properly created and the transfer would proceed, but folders with only spaces in their names cannot be deleted in Windows Explorer. You can only delete them from the DOS prompt. has been modified so that "Unknown" is substituted when a blank field is detected, so no non-deletable folders will be created.
  • Added Manager detection for when is not installed properly in a Windows user account. User is notified.

Release 8.5.1 (2004-04-04)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for Transfer and AudioMorph Crash in 'lameacm.acm'
Some users have reported crashes at the very beginning of transfers to the player, and when clicking 'AudioMorph' in the Options dialog. Clicking on "more info" in the Windows crash dialog indicates that the crash is occuring in a file named 'lameacm.acm'. This file is not part of Riorad and was installed by some other software on your system. It appears that many users have an old alpha release of this file that is unstable and buggy. While Riorad does not actually use this file, it crashes when Riorad tries to scan for encoders installed on your system. This release should skip over this file to avoid the crashes. Please let us know if you still get these 'lameacm.acm' crashes after upgrading to this release.

  • Fixed Size Display Error on Some Systems
Users with certain Windows 'Regional and Languange Options' settings may have seen a bug in previous releases where file and capacity sizes were displayed improperly. Specifically, the last digit of numbers greater than 999 would have their last digit cut off. For example, a file with size 7,255 KB would be displayed as 7,25 KB. This release fixes this bug. Please note that this was a display bug only and sizes were still correctly calculated internally in previous releases.

  • Fix for Continuous Streaming Playback
Release 8.5.0 introduced a bug where when streaming to apps such as Winamp or Windows Media Player, playback would stop after each song, requiring the user to manually click the 'Next Track' button in the player. This bug should now be fixed so that the next track plays automatically after the previous track is complete.

  • Fixed AudioMorph logging so that it does not report MP3-style bitrates when transcoding to WAV format.
  • Improved WMA library resource handling on long transfers.
  • Fixed SQL Engine so that 'plid' column now properly contains the playlist id, instead of duplicating the contents of the 'aid' column as it did in previous releases.

Release 8.5.0 (2004-03-23)

New Features:

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Enhancements to WMA AudioMorph Settings
In previous releases, AudioMorph would allow you to select bitrates and quality settings that were not actually supported by the WMA encoder. When these values were selected, the WMA encoder would default to its highest quality setting, generating files generally larger than desired. This release fixes the problems so that only valid values can be selected by the user in the configuration dialog.

  • Fix for Toolbar Conflicts
Other programs which improperly manipulate the toolbar can cause the wrong toolbar images to be displayed in Explorer windows, including Riorad windows. We've added the ability for Riorad to automatically repair the toolbar if it has been corrupted by other applications.

  • Streaming Playback Fixes
In previous releases, certain applications without version information (like Foobar2000) would not appear in the TrueStream application selection box. We've added a work-around and such applications should now be selectable for streaming playback. We've also worked around a bug in RealPlayer 10 that caused playback to cut out after 2 seconds. Finally, streamed titles should no longer contain unsightly URL-encodings such as %20.

  • Fixed bug where right-clicking on the Riorad Explorer window causes an error when Riorad Manager is not running.
  • In the Audio tab of the ATM dialog, navigating the track list using the arrow keys now properly updates the filepath box. In previous releases, the filepath box would only be updated when clicking on tracks with the mouse.
  • Fixed crash some users may have seen when navigating to the Device Information folder.
  • Riorad should now properly read and report the bitrate and samplerate of WAV files transferred to the Rio.
  • Fixed bug in Ogg Vorbis support installer that would wipe the Shared folder containing required components.

Release 8.4.1 (2004-02-18)

New Features:

  • Seekable Streaming
In this release, Explorer and Xtreamer streaming playback is seekable. This means that when streaming to playback software that supports stream seeking, you can fast forward, rewind, and jump around in a track. Stream seeking is supported in Winamp, Windows Media Player and other playback applications.

  • Full Row Selection Option
There is a new option to control whether the full row is highlighted when selecting an item in the right pane of Explorer. Although many people find the full row highlighting aesthetically pleasing, it also makes it more difficult to bring up the context menu for a folder by clicking in a blank area of the right pane. So now there is an option so you can choose which behavior you'd like.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • RioradSQL (Search and Reports) Installer Fix
This release fixes a bug in the Trial and Riot Editions where a component required for RioradSQL was not being properly installed. This is necessary for the search and content reports functionality to work.

  • Fixed time elapsed and time remaining counters in the main transfer dialog.
  • Fixed bug during transfers where tag titles were being set to the filename even when tag was complete.

  • Removed unnecessary URL-encoding characters in filenames when streaming and downloading.
  • Explorer now gives an error message when you try to stream locked tracks, instead of failing silently.

  • Removed non-functional "Jukebox" items from context menu for audio tracks.

Release 8.4.0 (2004-02-08)

New Features:

  • Nitrus and Eigen Support
We are pleased to add support for the Rio Nitrus and Rio Eigen in Riorad Explorer. Now you can navigate and manage your Nitrus and Eigen using the same great Riorad interface available for other Rio players.

  • Quick Navigation Buttons
We've added buttons to the Explorer toolbar that act as shortcuts to the most commonly used folders. This should make it easier to navigate quickly when your left pane tree is heavily expanded.

  • User-Selectable Double-Click Actions
In the General options of the configuration dialog, you can now select the action to be performed when double-clicking on audio tracks in the right pane. Configure a double-click to edit a tag or queue or play a track.

  • Custom TrueStream Application Registration
In previous releases, the applications you could select for TrueStream and Xtreamer playback only those that had properly registered themselves with Windows. In this release, you can now choose any application and register it with Windows automatically so it can be selected for TrueStream and Xtreamer.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for Rio Riot Support
The last couple of releases of Riorad have had a problem recognizing the Riot as a hard drive player instead of a flash-based player, so could have displayed the wrong folder set for navigation. This was due to the switch to a new library to support the Karma and other newer players. This problem should be fixed in this release.

  • Display and Appearance
    • 32-bit icons are now properly displayed in the right pane under Windows XP. In previous releases, icons were scaled to 256 colors and shadows were rendered as flat black.
    • Fixed list sorting in the right pane so that [ All: Artist ] meta folders now sort at the top even when that artist's album names start with a number or non-alphanumeric character.
    • Improved the appearance of all configuration dialogs.
    • Removed solid black line around the left pane tree in the Manager Options dialog.
    • Fixed systray icon display so they appear in the right order on Windows XP systems.

  • TrueStream and Xtreamer Playback
    • Fixed potential crash when clicking on the TrueStream options item in the configuration dialog.
    • Fixed bug that causes streaming playback to fail if the user modifies the "Transfer to PC" filename generation template to create folder structure.
    • Fixed problem where the TrueStream application selection drop-down box would display garbage characters for the "Default" entry on certain systems.
    • Fixed Xtreamer bug where files with tags containing illegal filename characters would download in IE with random 7-character filenames, instead of proper filenames generated from the tag.
    • Fixed Xtreamer navigation of artist, album, and genre folders where the name contains a double quotation mark.
    • Fixed MIME types served by Xtreamer for WMA, WAV, and Ogg Vorbis files.

  • Search
    • Fixed search function, which in previous releases wasa returning multiple copies of the same file instead of the correct search results.

  • Playlist Handling
    • Fixed bug in post-transfer automatic playlist generation where playlists would be created, but without any tracks in them. Playlist should now be properly generated after a transfer.
    • Further fix for problem experienced by some users where playlists created in Riorad would not display on Karma until opened again by RMM.
    • Hitting the 'Delete' key on a playlist item now only removes it from the playlist, instead of remove it and deleting the track, which was the behavior in previous releases.
    • You no longer need to hold down the 'Shift' key to reorder tracks in a playlist.
    • Improved the visual feedback during playlist reordering so it is easier to see where the dragged track will be inserted.

  • Transfers and Tag Handling
    • Fixed bug where Riorad would allow duplicate tracks to be transferred to the Karma. Duplicates should now be properly skipped.
    • Dramatically sped up "File List Build" process when transferring a large number of files.
    • Sped up Advanced Transfer Management tag reading phase by 10%.
    • When a file has no tag or no title, the tag fill dialog auto-fills the title field with the filename. This should be helpful for WAV files.

  • SpeedSync
    • Fixed bug where small squares appeared at the end of each filename listed in the "Transfer Back to PC" list.
    • SpeedSync now checks to make sure a PC target folder is selected before proceeding.
    • Improved tag caching speed by 10%.

  • AudioMorph
    • Fixed bug where the VBR quality setting for LAME transcoding would max out at 9 out of 100.

Release 8.3.5 (2004-01-23)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Improved Ogg Vorbis Support
This release enables Riorad to handle Ogg as a native file format for the Karma. Ogg files transferred to the Karma using Riorad will now display properly with the correct file format, play properly on the Karma itself, and show the correct bitrate and length.

  • Fix for Rio 600/800/900 Support
The new library we are using for Chiba, Cali, and Karma support apparently has some issues with the Rio 600/800/900 players. We have reverted back to the old library for SB and Riot support in order to workaround this issue. This switch does not diminish the functionality of Riorad for SB and Riot Editions in any way.

  • AudioMorph Fixes
A number of fixes have been made in the AudioMorph framework. First, Ogg files transcoded to MP3 will now properly transfer as a playable track. Second, the file size and bitrate displayed in the track listing should now properly reflect the characteristics of the transcoded file rather than the original source file.

  • Playlist Enhancements
Fixed bug where after creating just one playlist on the Karma, it would not be displayed by Riorad until at least one other playlist was created. In addition, when auto-generating playlists to match your folder structure on the PC, dashes are now used instead of backslashes to delimit each part of the playlist name. This way, such playlists can be transferred back to the PC without error.

  • TrueStream and Xtreamer Fixes
Removed blank lines from M3U files generated by TrueStream and Xtreamer in order to preserve compatibility with RealPlayer 10 and other M3U playback implementations. Also fixed TrueStream and Xtreamer so they can properly stream tracks with # symbols in their tags.

  • Added new option to Riorad Manager Options to disable the progress window that appears when connecting and disconnecting. Try enabling this option if Riorad Manager hangs while connecting.
Release 8.3.4 (2004-01-19)

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Fix for Long Load Times
The previous release had a performance bottleneck in reading information from the Rio player. This bottleneck would probably not be noticeable on flash-based players or hard-drive based players with only a few hundred tracks. However, on the Riot or Karma with thousands of tracks, you would have seen load and refresh times of several minutes, accompanied by 100% CPU utilization. This affected Riorad Manager, Riorad Explorer, and Riorad Xtreamer. This bottleneck was due to slow debug/validation code that was inadvertently left enabled in the library we use to communicate with the Rio players. Rio has since removed this debug code, and this release of Riorad is approximately 100x faster at connecting, loading, and refreshing. Connecting to a fully loaded Karma should now only take several seconds.

  • Fix for Crash on Connect
Fixed a bug in previous release where connecting to the Rio for a second time after having already connected and disconnected once could cause Riorad Manager to crash. In this release, you should be able to connect and disconnect freely without crashing or having to restart Riorad Manager.

  • Fix for Riot Transfer Crash
In the last release, initiating a transfer to the Rio Riot could cause a crash in Riorad Manager. This crash should now be fixed.

  • Search Fixes
The previous release may not have properly installed the Riorad components necessary for search to function in the Riorad Explorer and Xtreamer interfaces. This release should properly install the components to enable search.

  • Playlist Creation Fix
In the previous release, playlists created in Riorad would be visible in Riorad and in the Rio software, but not on the Karma itself. This release should fix this problem.

  • Ogg Vorbis Support Enabled
This release should enable Riorad to transfer Ogg files to the Karma as playable music files rather than as data files.

  • The 'Playlists' link on the Xtreamer homepage has been fixed so that it points to the playlists page instead of the search page.
Release 8.3.3 (2004-01-08)

New Features:

  • Rio Karma Support
Riorad Explorer now supports the Rio Karma hard drive based MP3 player. The full Red Chair feature set is available for the Karma, including such advanced features as One-Touch Synchro and SpeedSync, AudioMorph, Xtreamer, TrueStream, RioradSQL, sophisticated playlist handling, integrated data files support, and much more.

  • Rio Chiba and Cali Support
This release also adds support for the Rio Chiba and Cali flash based players. Riorad supports access to internal and external memory, playlist handling, and great features such as Tunes2Go and AudioMorph.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • AudioMorph'ed tracks now display the correct bitrate after being transferred to the player.
  • Significant speedups for browsing and track listings.
  • Fixed Rio Riot bug where all tracks transferred to Riot have their track number set to 1. Riorad should now transfer with the correct track numbers.
  • Fixed various help links within the software.

Release 8.2.0 (2003-10-20)

New Features:

  • Rio Riot Support
Riorad Explorer now supports the Rio Riot hard drive based MP3 player. View tracks by artists, albums, and genres, Simple and Advanced search, and keep its contents synchronized to your PC collection using One-Touch Synchro and SpeedSync.

  • Major Speed Improvements to Flash-based Player Support
The SB Edition of Riorad has gotten significant speedups when browsing the internal memory and external memory cards of the Rio flash-based players. In previous releases, switching views between internal and external would take progressively longer as you added more files. In this release, browsing should be quick and constant time.

  • Spreadsheet View
New "Spreadsheet View" in Riorad Explorer includes gridlines and alternating row coloring to make long track lists easier to read for those who prefer it. The row coloring is customizable. You can configure this mode in the General options. Note that Spreadsheet View appears in all Riorad folders except for the top level and the Device Information folders.

  • Installer Improvements
The Riorad installer (Full Editions only) now has an option to skip Desktop shortcut and StartMenu group creation. The uninstalller features a new icon to distinguish it from the Manager.

  • Better Connection Feedback
Riorad Manager now displays a "Connecting..." or "Disconnecting..." mini-window next to the systray icons to give better visual feedback when connecting to or disconnecting from a device.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes:

  • Case Insensitive Sorting
Riorad Explorer now consistently sorts all music data in a case-insensitive fashion. This brings Riorad in line with Windows' own sorting, and makes it easier to spot duplicate track titles, artists, and albums.

  • Minor visual improvements including a watermark in the Explorer window, and a larger track number column in playlist view to accomodate 4-digit numbers.
  • Fixed installation of Send To menu items to work on systems where the user's profile directory has been moved to a non-default location.
  • Fixed installation location for the copyright notice file.
  • Fixed minor installation bug not writing all URLs.
  • Restored several options that improve stability on Windows 2000 and XP systems.

  • Added additional progress display when the SpeedSync dialog is doing its processing, so it does not appear to freeze for several seconds before appearing.
  • Improved stability and error handling in SpeedSync.

  • Fixed Tunes2Go so that it does not select data files for transfer.
  • For flash-based players, when the memory is empty, Riorad now displays a message suggesting you drag and drop files instead of presenting a blank window.

  • Fixed problem where on some systems the About dialog would not display.
  • Added ellipses to context menu items where appropriate to clearly indicate which menu items trigger further dialogs and which cause a direct action.

Release 8.0.0 (2003-08-25)

New Features:

  • Rio S-Series, x00, and Nike psa[play Support
This is the first release of our Notmad Explorer product to support Rio MP3 player devices. Editions supporting Rio devices will be called Riorad Explorer, but the release numbers will track along approximately with Notmad Explorer. We have adapted all our of applicable Nomad II Edition features for flash players to the Rio S10, S50, S30S, S35S, 600, 800, 900, and Nike psa[play 60 and 120.

  • Tunes2Go for Rio
Tunes2Go is the long-awaited feature that quickly and easily transfers randomly generated or pre-built sets of songs to your Rio when you're on the way out of the house. Tunes2Go's spanning capability treats your Internal Memory and External Secure Digital Card as a single contiguous space, allowing you to transfer the whole set in one shot. You can also customize generated song sets and save them as playlists for later use.

  • AudioMorph Transcoding
Riorad Explorer supports on-the-fly transcoding of your audio files between formats and bitrates during transfers. For owners of smaller Rio flash devices, this allows you to fit more tracks onto your player by dynamically lowering the bitrate while leaving your original copy on the computer intact. AudioMorph supports transcoding of MP3 and WMA files with CBR, VBR, and ABR modes and a multitude of options. In addition, you can store your main music collection on your PC in extremely high-bitrate or uncompressed formats like WAV and then transcode on-the-fly to mid-range compressed bitrates when going mobile. AudioMorph even allows you to keep your PC music library in formats that aren't native to your player such as Ogg Vorbis. AudioMorph also allows future support for other formats such as FLAC or SHN.
